Photos of gang rape go viral on Facebook

If anyone has already posted this just delete. disbeliefI don't understand what would make people post these pics on FB and keep circulating them.

In another article it's stated that other teens and partygoers, however, are somehow less willing ...he crime. One teen said, "We are thinking it's being over-exaggerated. I don't think she was as messed up as she's making it out to be. I don't think she was raped." The comments on Facebook were similarly disgusting and victim-blaming; they included sentiments like "straight up WHORE," a "complete slut," and "Cmon who's not down for a gang bang." confused neutral

16-year-old girl drugged and attacked, police say

Maple Ridge, B.C. The Canadian Press

A 16-year-old girl was drugged and raped repeatedly by partygoers at a weekend rave near Vancouver as onlookers snapped photos that have since found their way onto Facebook, the RCMP said Thursday.

The attack happened at a rave last Friday night on a rural property near Pitt Meadows, east of Vancouver. Police believe the girl was given a substance commonly know as the date-rape drug.

“It's essentially one male having intercourse and when he's done, another one participates – that's a gang rape,” Insp. Derren Lench said in an interview.

“It's a sexual assault, it's an unwanted assault taking advantage of someone who is under the influence of this drug.”

Insp. Lench said the girl was drugged and, while she was conscious at the time, she didn't remember what happened to her until several days later. She came forward to police once she discovered the photos on Facebook.

He described the assault as “violent,” leaving the girl with undisclosed injuries.

Date-rape drugs can have hypnotic affects and can affect memory, according to an RCMP news release. Someone who ingests one of these drugs would appear very intoxicated, but would be unable to function normally or legally consent to sex.

There had been no arrests connected to the rape, but Insp. Lench said Thursday attackers are believed to include minors and young adults.

As for the photos, a 16-year-old boy was arrested and later released as prosecutors consider charges of producing and distributing child pornography.

The RCMP have been contacting Facebook users who have posted them and demanded they be removed and deleted. Many have complied, but some have so far refused.

Sgt. Jennifer Hyland, one of the lead investigators on the case, said the re-posting of the photos is only making the horror for the victim worse.

“What happened after this incident and continues to happen is beyond disgusting,” Sgt. Hyland said in a statement.

“These photos are child pornography. They have been viewed, shared, saved and re-posted numerous times. This is an offence and is so socially corrupt it is sickening. The posting and viewing of the photos is continuing to victimize this young girl and her family and needs to stop.”

Insp. Lench said it was proving difficult to keep the photos from reappearing.

Every time it's shut down on one Facebook [account], it seems to reappear and its been shared in several communities in the Lower Mainland, so the victim has to relive it on a daily basis,” Insp. Lench said in an interview.

“This [the photographs] is just one portion of a larger investigation. Obviously the sex assault aspect is our primary focus.”

He said police can ask Facebook to help them ensure the photos are removed, but he said anyone who doesn't heed the RCMP's warnings could face charges.

“Our power is to say, ‘By the way, if we find that you have that on your computer and have distributed it, then you may be facing charges,’” he said.

“People are possessing it, and people are distributing it, and that's an offence.”

An article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal last year said drugs are a factor in more than 20 per cent of sexual assaults, and noted such assaults appear to have increased during the past decade, although the data is limited.

The article noted victims had been consuming alcohol in 90 per cent of those cases, opening the risk they could unknowingly have consumed a date-rape drug.

Louisa Russell of the Canadian Association of Sexual Assault Centres said using drugs or alcohol to facilitate sexual assaults is nothing new.

“From our rape crisis lines, men have used alcohol and drugs to facilitate rape – the most common is alcohol – ever since we opened (35 years ago),” she said in an interview.

Russell said there must be stronger education to make certain teenaged boys – and all men – are aware of their legal and moral obligations when it comes to ensuring women willingly consent to sex.

“I think there is a lot of misunderstanding among young boys on consent,” she said.

“I think there's a lot of room for public education around that. I think that a lot of men know that and they abuse it, but there are some genuine questions, particularly from young boys, about what is the law and how do I make sure that I actually have consent.”

There have been other recent cases in Canadian schools involving teens and inappropriate and potentially illegal sexual activity.

Earlier this month, police in Calgary laid charges after a 16-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl who met on a social networking website met in a school field and performed a drunken sex act in front of friends.

Neighbours initially reported a sinister scene involving a young girl being brutally attacked by an older boy in front of a group of young people who were filming the encounter.

The reports of the attack proved incorrect, but police said they still laid charges because a 12-year-old can't legally consent to have sex with a 16-year-old.

In May of this year, the RCMP in Surrey, B.C., raised concerns about boys in Grades 11 and 12 challenging each other over Facebook to have sex with the most Grade 8 students.

The Mounties sent an officer to the school to explain the laws regarding the age of consent.

You know what the problem is is that people are growing up like these things are nothing. Or live through these things like its nothing. Ive heard some real messed up stuff about young people now a days, seems its getting worse.

On top of that sites like 4chan, which futher desensitize you more and throw you into that state of thinking also add on. 4chan is the most popular image board ever, and the content thats there shows the collective conciousness of how people are living now a days.

Nothing but gore, child porn, and that sort of stuff on there. And of course they all post there because its funny.

Well it can certainly be used as a marketing tool, but whether it would lead to making money for you is another thing. It does however seem to be more and more the case that companies are expected to have a facebook page.

I can see how it might be a useful marketing tool - for example, a friend of mine went to a particular restaurant and enjoyed it, then looked up that restaurant's facebook page and 'liked' it. Now all of his friends can see that he likes this restaurant. A link is provided to the restaurant's facebook page (which I then visited). The facebook page included a link to their web site (which I then visited). I haven't visisted the restaurant yet, but, you know, I might do, and at least now I know it exists.

Of course, the other way it could be useful as a marketing tool is if you could make use of the facebook data that was recently compiled and released to the world at large.

Aside from that, I agree with you, there is very little of real value to facebook.

I was going to say that it is useful for keeping in touch with people, but in reality it doesn't provide much advantage over email and instant messaging.

Most of the time, all I see is people sharing information that (as has been amply demonstrated by the subject of this thread) simply should not be shared.

Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

Animals!!!!

Either she consented to taking the drug, having rough sex with several people, having it photographed and plastered all over the Internet to humiliate herself and then later changed her mind.....

Or she was gang raped. - there's no in-between

I blame easy access to porn for a lot of the sexual escapades young folks are in engaging in now. Shit, we didn't even know existed when we were their age. disbelief

I agree with you 100%. I absolutely hate Facebook. I don't use it at all. I think it's a complete waste of my time and I firmly believe that a large majority of the people using this tool every single day use it to show off and say to the world "look at me and look at my life". WTF? I just don't get it.

Sure, it would be great for many people who don't see their families or close friends very often, but unfortunately IMHO - it's really just to say look at me.

I use it to stay in touch with some friends (a very select number) but even I've noticed the bullshit from people who know that I know they're posting crap. There was a recent comedian who did a bit about people posting stuff like "having a picnic, beautiful day - life is perfect"...and he said 'fuck off. I know your a manic depressive who cries each day and won't leave the house" - if I told you that was so true of one set of friends I have...identical !!

I used FB to find some old friends who I couldn't find through google. Through those friends I found other friends from HS and my old job that I'd lost touch with. So I'm glad I was able to do that. And once you find them it's better to stay in touch by email, etc. But it is a huge waste of time. On myspace I would check in once or twice a week and be done with it. On FB I got sucked into Vamp Wars. rolleyes err

I limit myself now but some of the things I see there are just insane and contain way TMI. This is a new lowlow. Posting pics of a rape???? Who actually wakes up and THINKS that is a good idea??? WTF is wrong with people?

And NMuzak...I'm sorry. sad

I´ve always felt that using this word this way is so insulting to animals cause they don´t do idiotic stuff like that. Only humans. We are the worst "animals".

They say FB is working with authorities to stop it but as soon as they take pics down they pop up somewhere else. Even if FB deletes the accounts of everyone doing it the idiots will just make another profile. Really how can they stop it?
