When I was in college, I asked my mom to write out the recipes of my favorite dishes of hers. She hand-wrote everything in a red notebook, and I still have it. I love opening it up. In fact, I'll be using it today when I make my mom's ginger cookies, which are the best. I keep all my recipe clippings in that same notebook too.

Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything is the official cookbook I turn to most often. Everything I've ever made out of it has turned out great. He's a wonderful cook.

I like to read cookbooks, and I love the ones that provide some information about the science of it. Madeleine Kamman's The Making of a Cook is really fun for that.

And finally, The America's Test Kitchen Cookbook is great for quick and simple recipes. It's not too extravagant, but their stuff is really good.

My mom made a family cookbook, too. Of course, she did it on a computer - didn't want to write it all out for four daughters, plus the best friend of of one of those daughters. lol

I have two favorite cookbooks (other than the family cookbook). The first is from a restaurant that no longer exists in Madison. It's where Odessa Piper, a James Beard Award winner and pioneer of local, natural restaurant cooking, got her start...

And I couldn't live without Baking with Julia. Boca Negra and Nectarine Upside Down Cake... drool

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Individually, these are not my favorite recipes, but this book prety much singlehandedly taught me to cook. It is more of a textbook than a collection of meals. And to this day, it is the one I use the most (though I often make slight adjustments to the recipes, now).

It has every damn recipe imaginable in it!

nod Sometimes just reading them nourishes me.

I actually prefer the Taste of Home magazine, specifically the Simple and Delicious edition. It always has some fast, good and cheap recipes.

Oh, and I like this little book.

Yep. Family cookbooks and collected recipes. Don't generally have a favorite other than that. I usually end up skimming through most cookbooks looking for recipes I can convert to vegitarian dishes.

Random side note: I recently started scanning my Great-Grandmothers 1937 journal. Started in late 1936 and the latest dated clipping I've found in it so far is 1955. It's a trip! It's filled with newspaper clippings about my family and their friends around the Hershey Pennsylvania area, wars, local news events, Hollywood of the day AND recipes. The first page is a picture of Clark Gable and Carole Lombard. Across the top of the page it says "She Died For Her Country." It's about 380 pages and although some of them are blank at the back, there's at least another 150 clippings stuffed in between the pages, too. Plus, a majority of the pages has more than one thing stuck to it. Anyway, the recipes are great! Totally old school cooking. Written totally different than cookbooks are now. I'll post a PhotoBucket link when I get done with the project (if I get done, tried before and failed lol ).

Ohmygod, WHAT is the cake on the cover of that? I assume strawberry? That recipe alone would seem to be worth buying the book for.
