I would have been asleep already. I heard about it the next day when my dad called to tell me to turn on the news. I remember sitting in bed talking to my sister in law about what kind of world we were bringing our children into. (I was pregnant at the time)
Back then I didn't know anyone living in NYC, now I know a few and would be worried sick if that had happened more recently.

I was 11, watching TV when all the channels switched to the news suddenly. I saw the second plane hit...

I was in my classroom with a group of students. I turned on the TV, not realizing that I would witness such horror with my kids. The school went into lock-down mode, so we moved to the cafeteria, where we tried to calm the students down. We live in a commuter town, so some of the kids and 2 teachers lost family members that day.
My Dad drove an 18-wheeler, and made a delivery on Church St. early that morning. He was leaving the City as the 1st plane hit. He called my Mom to tell her to put on the news, then the cell towers went out and she didn't hear from him for hours. She kept calling me at school... Daddy's job finally called me Mom to let her know that he had contacted them on his CB radio and was on his way back to the yard. My Dad quit after a week; his company was later commissioned to haul debris from the site and he said it was just too painful. That was the first time I'd ever seen my Dad so shaken.
One of my friends was also killed in Tower 2.

I was watching the towers burn from my office window at the Empire State Building. Then the alarms went off telling us to evacuate.

I was very pregnant and sitting infront of the TV and due to go to my monthly doctors appointment, I was watching the tv while getting ready, as I recall. It was during the morning tv stuff so I couldn't figure out if it was an add for an upcoming movie or what. I remember thinking "why is Brian Gumbel being so serious about this movie?" Then something like "Isn't Martha Stewart suppose to be on now?" It took me over a minute or so to really get that it was really happening. There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.

Cali here. My ex was sleeping on the couch and he kept calling me. He told me to wake up and turn on the tv. He said a plane hit the World Trade Center. I was thinking a private turboprop, maybe a pilot in training. I turned on the tv and couldn't understand why the hole seemed so big. I flipped through the networks and settled on CNN. I had a doctor's appointment that morning and when I got there, the doctor apologized and cancelled my appointment for my back injections because his mother in law worked in the WTC and his wife was coming undone and he was stressed and heading home. So my buddy who drove me (they didn't want me driving after the procedure) went back to my house and I just watched tv for the next two days crying. I couldn't turn off the tv. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

I had just put my kids on the school bus. I walked back in the house and my wife said that another plane had hit the WTC right as Charles Gibson was talking about the first one.

I had to work that evening so I was at home that morning. I had just got up and made me a cup of coffee and turned on the TV. When I turned on the TV, there was a shot of New York from a distance taken from the ocean. All I could see was smoke everywhere. No buildings or anything, just smoke. I didn't know what happened because from the image on the screen, it looked like the entire city had been blown up. Then a few minutes later, I saw one of the World Trade Center buildings on fire. I kept looking for the other building because I knew there were two of them side by side but I never did see the other building. Apparently, when I first turned the TV on and saw nothing but smoke, it must have been directly after the first building fell. I continued watching TV and then I saw the second building fall live on TV.
As I watched the TV, the reporters kept reporting that another plane had hit the Pentagon and another one had gone down in a field but it was originally headed for the White House. While hearing all this, a shot of fear rushed through my body even though I was thousands of miles away in Mississippi and there's certainly nothing down here worth blowing up but it still scared me because the attacks seemed to keep coming and I was wondering where the next attack would be. I was at work, in MA, and I remember a client coming in and telling us that the WTC had been hit by a bomb. And then another came in and said it was hit by a plane, and we had no TV so we were all like WTF? We put on a radio. I then tried calling my family in NY to check they were okay and I don't think I got through for a while. Then we had heard than a power plant near us may be under attack. Just all sorts of confusion. Finally I heard from my family and everyone was okay, big sigh of relief, but I don't think I really got what had happened until I got home and saw it on TV. And then I was like why was my ass at work all damn day?
TO me, it was especially poignant, as a NYer, and the fact the view from my apartment my whole growing up years was the WTC! It was like a piece of my childhood shattered type of moment. In fact it is hard to go home and not see the Twin Towers, it's just something you always saw, like the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State and took for granted. I remember that year was especially hard anyway because Aaliyah had just passed. It seemed like that year was full of senseless tragedy....
In fact this whole week is like a memorial issue for me because WTC 9/11, then 2Pac passing 9/13, and then my sister passed 9/15, plus I kinda start off sad in Aug with my mom's birthday and the passing of Aaliyah
All I really know is it's a shame that all that loss and tragedy happened, and this country learned not nar a lesson, and is still just as bigoted and full of hatred as ever. That was our chance to truly come together as a nation. I think we blew it.

That whole 'unity' crap lasted for a few days, then New Yorkers were back to their usual shitty selves. Hearing such wonderful terms as 'sand n*****s' and 'dune coons', and reading reports of Muslim Americans being harrassed and beaten sure did a lot for my patriotism.

I turned it on, and just a few minutes later the first tower fell... I just sat watching my little 13" TV for the next 12 hours.

At home listening to Howard Stern on the radio. After he reported that the first plane hit, I turned on the TV and watched the rest of the coverage on mute while continuing to listen to the Stern broadcast. If I had not gotten laid off a few months earlier, I might have been right in the middle of it since my office was located downtown near Wall Street.

I was at work. A co-worker that was listening to her soap opera on one of those tv/radios was like, "they just said that a plane crashed into the WTC in NY". We were all like, "what?" So we all went to watch the TV in a conference room and were just stunned. It was such a horrible day. "Bring friends, bring your children and bring foot spray 'cause it's gon' be funky." ~ Prince

Similar story with me. I was in tech school and our daughter had just been born less than two months prior so I was still waking up in the middle of the night with her. I got a call a little after 6 AM from my ex's uncle in NY about it and I was thinking the same, that it was some small little private plane and aside from that unfortunate person, it wasn't a big deal (this was before the second one hit). So I was a little annoyed at first, because I felt like I was being awakened from my already limited sleep for something rather minor, until I saw what exactly was happening.
We got sent home from class after just a couple of hours that day.

I remember waking up that morning as usual. Sending the boys to school. The oldest at home was 12. (He has now been to Iraq and is deploying to Afghanistan soon). The youngest was 9. I was alone that morning and didn't have the TV on. I had the computer on. I walked by and noticed a picture that looked like news of one of the towers burning. I thought it was a trailer for a movie. I went to the bathroom, came back to the computer with a cup of coffee. Sat down and turned the volume on the speakers up. What I heard shocked me so badly I could not move. By the time I figured out what was going on I was out of the door running to the school to get my sons.
I went home and sobbed and kept on sobbing for a week. I taped every channel and every news announcement. I taped over the O.J. trial. That certainly didn't seem important anymore. I still have the tapes. I kept my sons next to me all day and night for a week. I could not stop crying.
Yes, there is war and murder and atrocities and horrible incidents all over the world...we humans are masters at hurting one another. Many times for no reason at all. I ache inside when I think of all the children who are suffering and all the innocent people who die in the diamond mines and in the drug 'war'...this just hit far too close to home. I didn't tape it. I collected print coverage. I could not stop crying and I could not turn off the television. I slept with the television on and would wake up and start watching and crying.

I had just gotten to work about an hour prior...had been listening to howard on my way in...everything was fine. then someone comes down the stairs at work and says "turn the TV on" so we did. we all stood staring at it amazed and confused...like maybe it was an accident at first....then we watched as the second plane hit then the reports of the pentagon and the plane that went down in PA. I was like HOLY SHIT, we are under attack! I really thought more and more attacks were coming. I called a few people....but strangely...didn't leave work. None of us did...we just stood there watching the TV all day. such a sad day. "not a fan" yeah...ok

It was just before I got to work when the first plane hit. I was just firing up my computer when my mom called and told me that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center. Well, I thought it was like...a Cessna or something...so I just blew it off.
But a buzz started around work. It was bigger than that. Someone turned on the TV in the VP of Creative's conference room and a bunch of us were in there when the second plane hit. I knew immediately what all that meant. And then the Pentagon...and Pennsylvania (the plane meant for the Capitol)...
I remember calling my mom back in a panic - my sister is a flight attendant. Was she flying that day? We still didn't know the airlines involved or which flights. Well, it turned out that - yes - she was flying that day, but her flight was out west somewhere. Later, we found out that her NWA flight been forced to land in Boise, Idaho - where she would be for the next five days. She was bored - but alive.
Anyway, back to the conference room. When the first tower fell, I ran out of the room - feeling like I was going to vomit and break down in tears at the same time. It was as if every one of those being crushed in that building cried out - and I could hear it.
Later...after both towers had fallen...a huge group of people went outside, formed a circle, clasped hands, and prayed. I still remember what that day was like. Not a cloud in those deep, blue skies. Coolish - with a fairly strong west wind.
At around noon, they told us we could go home if we wanted to. No work was getting done. I hung around for a little while, because I didn't have internet at home and wanted to stay online a bit longer to make sure friends in New York and DC were safe. But around 2:00 I left work.
I will never forget the horror of that day. Never. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I think it was mostly over when I woke up (here in CA), but I remember my gf calmly asking if I had heard what happened when she saw me watching the TV. She was so calm, that when I found out I could not believe it. I said "wait, that is really bad!"
What I remember most about that day was how quiet the skies were.
The TV footage all blends together, as for the next year at least you could not excape some form of discussion about it on the news. My Legacy

On holiday in Scarborough (England). We walked past an arcade and heard over the radio that a plane had crashed into the world trade centre. I didn't know it was anything as huge as it was until we got back to our cottage an hour or so later. We put the TV on and we stayed glued to it in shock for the rest of the day.
