The "Little Black Dress" A Ladies Issue?

Any girls out there having this problem?

I have a dress. The "little black dress". Every girl has one. It's perfect, and you look awesome in it.

You know the one....

The question is, when and where is it appropriate to wear this great dress? There's got to be a

right time and place, but gosh, I just can't figure it out.

I can get a date but if they're looking for booty, I have a hard time crossing the line. I can waltz

up to it, but after thinking about it, my conscience kicks in, and I make lame excuses and

back out. It's an issue in itself, but any rate, I won't be getting to wear " the dress".

I have a dear friend who would take me somwhere that I could wear it. But he's just a friend,

to wear a sexy dress would be a tease, and I feel it would be fair. It just wouldn't be appropriate.

There happens to be a very nice bar/restruant in my area. I thought about wearing it there.

Although i wouldn't mind attention, and it does''nt bother me being looked upon as eye-candy,

I'd be attending alone, so I would dress in somthing else because I wish not to attract any

kind of troubles.

Silly and as foolish it may seem, I can't be the only lady out there who has had this issue of

when and where the dress could be worn. I'm sure every woman from 18 thru 80 has had to

make a decision on it. You ladies and gents are a whole lot smarter than myself and I was just wondering what you think.

Please don't say "wear it jumping off the bridge" or "just leave it on the hanger". I thought of those things already.

Any suggestions?

funny. i have a litle black dress on my closet that i still haven't worn, just because the right occasion hasn't come along yet.

the one time the dress would have worked, the day was windy and would have lifted the skirt in a way that seemed, inappropriate .. .

It if were a true "little black dress," you could wear it anywhere.

I wish ladies would wear nice dresses all the time! It's a very classy and feminine piece of clothing and I have nothing but respect for those who dare to wear it on everyday occasions.

nod So true. If it's the "classic" little black dress, you can dress it up or down with accessories. The one place it will always be appropriate is a funeral. lol

Exactly. Different shoes...different bag...different accessories...different look.

The mere fact that a dress is black does not make it a "little black dress."

To give a proper answer I think you need to post a pic of you wearing the dress. Or just a pic of the dress if you don't want to post a pic of yourself.

Why are you so worried? Is it too revealing?

If you don't feel comfortable wearing the dress, you need to find another one.

I wear dresses (and skirts) all the time. To work, to dinner, on the weekends... I don't see it as "daring" at all. smile

Me neither. What I meant is that you would need to "dare" to go your own way, and not care if you're sometimes the only one to wear a dress. That can be an intimidating prospect to some.

I have a black merino knit dress - jewel neckline, long sleeves, A-line silhouette, hits about three inches above the knee. That thing is a blank canvas. I wear it to work, out in the evening...hell, I even wore it to a motorcycle show with boots and tights. (Sweetie and I were going to a friend's birthday dinner after and I wasn't going to have time to change.)

I switched to an evening bag, added some jewelry and off we went!

My little black dress is a simple 69 euro shift dress from ZARA (knee length) that I dress up or down depending on the occasion.

I've worn it to restaurants for catered events with strappy stilettoes and a clutch bag.

I've worn it in winter to afternoon dance performances with high heeled boots, an oversized dramatic cardigan and BIG, bulky conversation piece jewelry. For evening performances in winter, I go with an even spikier heeled boot and a velvet warp smoking jacket.

I've worn it to a wedding under a cream colored Chanel Jacket with black piping, a neutralizing shoe and pearls. Black is generally not acceptable for most weddings, but I live in a very cold locale close to the North Sea. Summers here won't even reach the low 60's at times, an it's often grey and rainy, so black really is the color of the day for ALL occasions.

For summer appointments in the city, I've worn it with fashionable flat sandals, large frame sunglasses, and oversized handbag, sometimes hair down, sometimes pulled back in a neat ponytail.

This one is from Calvin Klein, a little shorter than the sheaths I like to wear:

Here's another one from that I have from ZARA that's a bit of a twist on the classic sheath. I've gotten a lot of milage out of this one:

Let me explain why I posted this in the first place, and how it becanme an issue for me.

I didnt think there was anything wrong with the dress, so I decided to wear it to a church meeting.

Before I got to the door, my19 year old son asked me to cover up . I didn't have time to argue as I was running late ,but i did as he asked and wore the dress. Noone at the meeting had a problem with it,but the incident started some personal conflict for me.

You all asked to see the dress. I don't always have access to a computer or a camera , so i asked around to find someone to take the pic for me.

Here's what happened:

I found someone to take the pic for me at my apt. complex. i told him that i posted and people wanted to see the dress. This person said that they would take the pic for me, but asked that I would not wear the dress to walk across the parking lot. Th ey said "I don't want anyone to think that anything is GOING ON'.

Theytook the pic, and then asked me if I was uploading it to a PORN site or if i was (wink) ,LOOKING FOR A JOB?". I allowed this person to take the pic and I left.

There were 2 people present at the time, both middle aged.

I wasn't originally having any issues, but the reaction to my dress sort of caught me off-guard, and started me second guessing myself. Your right ,,,, the issue is'nt really the dress. I'm 50, and I know thatI should wear tha damn dress, but peeps, the reality is that I'm not sure it"s worth the grief.

The dress is cute and you look fucking great in it.

But if you felt you needed to, you could tone it down a little with a cardigan and a belt.

Okay, I don't want to hurt your feelings...but that dress is way too short (with a slit making it appear even shorter omfg ) and way too tight - for a woman of any age. Especially for daytime. And the wide belt is just wrong.

If your 19-year-old son finds the dress embarrassing, that should tell you something.

Look at the dresses Ottensen posted. Those are little black dresses - and super chic.
