I love what I do!

I used to play school with my dolls.

Sometimes I wish I could have done something in fashion, but I know I made the right choice. It's me.

My passion is lying dormant right now (stupid economy). Window Fashions are a hard sell when everyone's losing their homes...

My new day job is renting linens, chef coats and bathroom supplies to restaurants. Best thing about my job is I get to drive around all day, try to sell things and eat alot of really amazing food...

Sometimes I wish I had a career. Then I'd have something to fall back on or keep building on, but as it's been for many years I start from scratch every time I change jobs. It does offer a certain freedom (and nice variety) but of course it brings uncertainty too.

At least your passion is marketable under normal circumstances. Most of us would prefer to do things that are incredibly hard to make a living out of, like writing fiction, acting or other artistic endeavours.

My career is over I always wanted to be a stay at home domestic engineer and I did it for almost 20 years... Now Im unemployed

I have always loved the medical field... I have done the CNA thing, couldnt handle the white trash women who were always having to pick up ONE of their baby daddies from jail, or just not showing up cuz they were lazy, and most of them were mean to the residents, which didnt sit well with me so I found it hard to get along with most of the girls, and it was ALWAYS run on the shortest amount of people possible.. Then I did Dialysis tech... It was great but again, they have such tight budgets that they run things on the least amount of people they can get by with not to mention we were ALWAYS running out of important things like my size of gloves or the water proof gowns to protect us from the blood.. They take dangerous shortcuts that I felt would endanger myself and I just couldnt live with that... I was in charge of infection control and it was hard for me to break their old habits...

Sooooooooo I still would like to be an RN.. maybe if you are a higher up in that field things would be different? IDK....

We are not old!

But I do understand about not wanting to spend $$ to find out you hate it.

Hmmm… I never thought about what I do as a “career” but rather a job, even though I am salaried, get plenty of vacation time and do quite well for myself.

I stumbled into what I do now – it wasn’t really a conscious effort. I never really knew what I wanted to do, so I just did what seemed to make sense at the time and somehow that’s landed with me working at Target corporate headquarters and I even managed to get into IT somehow. And I don’t even have a degree.

So I’m certainly not living out my dream. I never really had any dreams, career-wise. My job has allowed me to pursue other dreams, though, such as traveling as much as possible and owning my own home.

I’m on the verge of needing to get out and do something else. After nearly 14 years I think I’ve had enough of corporate life. I just need to get my act together to move on to the next stage – owning my own business. No more corporate dress codes, no more soul-destroying meetings, no more developmental statuses to talk about my strengths and “opportunities”.

Now I just have to figure out how to hang tight until I can get there.

Getting that degree, is NEVER a wate of money. A degree, makes you more marketable. As a counsellor, I tell my students this all of the time. Asked yourself, what is motivation and how will a degree help you in getting you closer in making that goal a reality. Saying that furthering your education and the piece of paper that shows you completed something, is NEVER a waste of money.

Here is what I tell my students, some who are in the same boat that your in. First, you need to know, what it is you really want to do and build on it. At present, the waiting list for nursing school is long. While waiting, I advise them into persuing their associates, in healthcare adminstration. They would still be a nurse, but on the admin side. By the time they get that degree, (2 years), they are able to get into nursing school, allready ahead of the game....A nurse with a degree. This means, more money and no bed pans to clean. The point I am trying to make is, really sit yourself down and figure out what you like to do, why you want to do that and if you can make more money doing it with a degree. I myself, always loved law. I got my degree in poli sci degree and just got my MBA in marketing. Yes, I work as a conscellor but, believe it or not, my degrees have helped me in what I do.

No. I don't *hate* my job, but I don't like it. I don't consider it a career. I left a job in my "career" choice because the stress from my supervisors was making me physically and mentally ill, and I haven't been able to get another one in that field...yet. The best thing about the job I have now is that for the first time in my life, I'm making a decent salary as a nonprofit employee. If I could go back in time, I might choose another more "practical" major with art history as my minor, or maybe grad school for something other than modern art and criticism.

I HATE my job!! I have two degrees that have NOT served me well at all and I do feel like it was a waste of time and money to get them.

i'm lucky i work for good people. i like my job.

I am happy with my career choice, but have hated my jobs due to petty drama with greedy management and my latent anxiety/depression and just not liking to deal with John Q Public. I wish I would have known earlier to flesh out my education a bit better and not have been so one track minded. I am now looking to expand opportuities in my career and combine a little further education to have better options.

The job I have now is a low payin assistant job at an insurance brokerage firm, which I only took because it took me a year and a half just to find it after bein laid off from my previous job.

I have a Bachelors in Criminal Justice and an Associates in Liberal Studies. I've been tryin to get into the C.J. field for years to no avail. I guess its a sign I'm not supposed to be in it.

well here's the deal....waaaaay back in the day when I went to college, I only went to shut my mother up. My original major was Fashion Merchandising, but I changed it because the school I went to had a shitty program and I couldn't afford to change schools. So, I changed it to C.J. cuz, well, it was easy. I only got the Associates because halfway thru college I almost quit and decided since I had enough credits to get an Associates, I would just settle for that. But my mom was all so I stayed and got the Bachelors.

Yes, the plan was to go to Law School, but by the time I got outta college, I was sick of school then life got in the way(marriage, divorce and whatnot) and I ended up stuck in insurance hell for the last 15 years.

Now, I wanna find a career in the Travel Industry. I love to travel and to be able to do something I love AND get paid well for it would be my dream.

My personal feeling is that, unless you have a burning desire to do something specific and a four-year degree is the only way to achieve it, college is a huge fucking waste of time and money.

After 15 years of just going from job to job, everything from home daycare, to selling furniture, to adminstrative assistant, to evidence tech, I went back to school and got my requirements for Radiology Technologist.

I am now a mammo tech, which isn't as bad as some might think. I get paid really well, work at a really nice place with really great women. Just wish I didn't have to work a 40 hour work week.

Thanx for the encouragement. I am gonna look into some things and see what I can find out. Life is way too short to be stuck in a job I hate day in and day out.
