The fact that you're paranoid doesn't mean people aren't out to get you

My boss just rescheduled my performance review for the end of the day. Should I be nervous? [img:$uid]http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g216/rebecca8273/emoticon/eusa_shifty.gif[/img:$uid]

Sadly, that is where my mind went.

I actually went into his office a little while ago (to drop off a vacation request form) and said, "So, uhhhh...are you trying to make me paranoid, moving my review to the end of the day?" lol

Believe me, if it were only about my work (as these reviews used to be), I wouldn't be worried in the least. Unfortunately, in the last couple of years, the reviews have become as much about how nice you are as anything. And by "nice," I mean you can't take issue with anything - even if it's completely business related. You just have to be nicey-nice all the time. Because, if you aren't, they will call you mean and ding you for a quarter of your bonus.

This has happened to me twice in the last three years. The system is set up so, based on the dollars allotted, only three-quarters of the people who work here will get their full bonus. That means they are looking for any reason they can find to nail you. And since my work is never an issue, they usually go for the other. rolleyes

It's pretty ridiculous, seeing as how I've been here for 14 years and have made it through more re-orgs than I can count. Funny, the work is always the key issue when it comes down to that.

Mm. You remember my previous rant about letting the weak fall aside so the strong can get on with it? Well lets add nice to that. Effa nice! lol At times in my life I've supervised up to 70 people. I can guarantee you their reviews were based on performance, not how "nice" they were to other people. Now, there is of course a line to be crossed. If attitude is making it difficult to get work done that's something altogether different. But whenever somebody complained about another employee being "unfriendly", or "mean", or said something ridiculous like "I'm afraid to aproach them" rolleyes , we had a nice long talk about interacting with others in the office. It's not high school. They're not your friends. Do your job, get paid and play NICE outside of the office.

The problem here is that they do something called "360 feedback," meaning they solicit input from any number of people who work with you - however periferally. And it's all anonymous, so there's no way you can even respond to charges that you were horrible to someone. All it takes is one person with something stuck up their nose and you're fucked.

What's really been bad is that, most times, at mid-year reviews (which is what this is today), I've heard nothing but how great I am. And then, at the year-end review (where the bonus gets decided), I'm suddenly a jerk who doesn't deserve the full bonus.

I know it's all bullshit. But it's some hella demoralizing bullshit.

It sounds like complete bullshit on any number of levels. Not the least of which is your supervisors apparent inability to evaluate their employees worth on their own. Lazy. Sorry to hear that.

You could become evillol and figure "Hell, since I'm going to be losing some of my bonus regardless of what I do I'll at least EARN losing the bonus."

Start taking off heads left and right. evillol

I kid!!! Hope it goes well today! As rotten as it is to lose $$, a bad review from a messed up system is not an accurate review.

The problem with jobs nowadays in this economy, they will look for any excuse to save money, or take advantage of employees, knowing that people don't want to risk their jobs.

They have to look for ways to 'downsize' and save whatever pennys they can.

They make you work even on Christmas holiday, no overtime or holiday pay, and make it mandatory.

I don't know about your job but a lot of companies are doing that.

Ok, since I'm griping, let me also add that they try to manuever things so they won't have to end up giving benefits or medical insurance.

Bummer.

Ooooo. If you like onions and artichokes we'd be gettin' nasty tonight. lol I had some left over grilled artichoke halfs that were marinated in balsamic, crushed garlic and fresh rosemary. I scraped all the meat off, cut up the hearts and added all that to Julia Child's basic onion soup recipe while the onions were cooking down (before the broth went in, so all the artichoke meat had time to liquify and blend with the onions). Holy shnikeys is it good! It'll be even better after I get back from the store with some fresh sourdough. drool

Genesia, don't be nervous. It just releases stress chemicals which make you look and feel like shit. Eat some bacon or something.

The thing that gets me about this whole process is that the mid-years aren't written reviews. They're just casual "touch bases." So they can praise me to the heavens right now and there'll be no record for me to point to when they come back in six months with some bonus-busting bullshit.

Oh, well - the mid-year is over and I have bigger fish to fry today. And who knows? Maybe I'll get that other job and the next review will be with someone else, entirely. shrug

Thank you all for your support. cool

same thing happens to my husband! people always complain about him just because he actually requires them to do their jobs. he manages over 200 people. so there are bound to be people that don't like you. what's funny is they act as if he's this scary person to even talk to. lol lol i hate his mid-year reviews! they always say he's great at his job, but doesn't have good people skills. this annoys the fuck out of me! they just don't want to promote him or give him a full raise.mad mad
