You're welcome. If you need any help, send me an org note. There are sites that you can look at that will tell you exactly what a person in a certain field makes. One site that I use is indeed.com. It tells you where certain jobs are, how much one makes in that field, etc. I have been where you are, being in something that I hate. However, as long as you have the drive and determination to get out of the rut that ur in, then that's a start. I also seen that we are BOTH libra's!! Yes, we are and I do. However, I also know that we can not only be our worst enemy but we get complacent at times. You have many gifts, Shock. Don't let them go to waste. You will never be happy, if you are not doing those things that make u happy. You will find a way, just believe in yourself and do ur research. Start with that link, I gave u. It also, has what u stand to make in the field of ur choice. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

Yes to the first question, no to the second.
I've been drawing since I was a kid. I wouldn't be happy doing anything else.

U got that right, I do get complacent. I need to work on that.
I will definately check out the link.

I go back and forth between liking my job and hating my job. If I could do it all over again, I would learn a skill like carpentry or welding. All I do now is sit in an office writing and thinking. It would be cool to be able to earn a living with my hands, if I had to or wanted to. a psychotic is someone who just figured out what's going on

That's kinda what I keep thinking. I really loved my part-time job as a barista a few years ago. Not the same as carpentry or welding, but I made damn good coffee drinks. If I could make enough to live off of comfortably doing that full-time I totally would.

I don't think there was any other choice for me, it was pretty clear cut
graphic design or bust
I have no idea what people do in other occupations. All I know is I know I like to play around in photoshop and Illustrator and get paid for it

There is a really cool school near me that teaches welding, blacksmithing, glass making, neon light making, and all kinds of stuff. I've been thinking of signing up for some classes. [Edited 9/2/10 6:31am] a psychotic is someone who just figured out what's going on

That's really cool! You totally should. I did just a bit of metal sculpture when I was in high school and I remember really loving working with the material.
hmmm... I just got a community education catelog. I've done some yoga classes through them (cause it's really cheap) but I should look for other stuff too. |

I made my career decision 25 years ago in high school. I enjoy doing it and I'm somewhat good at it I think. At least better than anything else. So no regrets at all.

Do I like what I do now? No, but I don't absolutely hate it. I have talents in other areas, but I need to make a living. There are so many things I'm interested in now, but at the time I entered school, I didn't really know what I wanted to do. I just knew I had to get a college education, plus it was always understood that my parents expected me to go and finish. Hell, they saved their entire married lives to put my brother and me through school. So I majored in English and secondary education, but am I teaching? No. After I did my student teaching at a DC high school, I knew it wasn't for me.
I was working at a hospital part-time while in college, so after I graduated, I continued working at the hospital. I got promoted and just continued to stay. BUT, if I had known better back in the day, I would have majored in biology. I think I would have made an excellent veterinarian. [Edited 9/2/10 10:19am]

it's crazy to think back to when I was 15 and choosing the subjects I would take in the last 2 years of high school, that would decide what university courses I would then be eligible for. CRAZY!!! 15 years old - how can a kid have any idea. What I wish we all knew back then is, that you do what you think is right, because later on you can always change career, most people do but we didn't know that then. Anyway, ever since I saw a career pamphlett about graphic design that listed all the implements we might use in this trade (like yoken markers ) I was hooked. Even though by the time I graduated those were obsolete
I remember the heady days of marker rendering at uni so fondly that alone might have made those 3 years without any money (or ) worthwhile.

I have never had a career, just a job. I am currently without employment, and I honestly don't know what I want to do. 'why y'all trying to say goodbye? I didn't go anywhere, I'm right here, im all around you,always..'

it's a whole other thing now I'd never had much affinity with computers before, but in second year they taught us how to use macs (the previous year, they taught us TYPING on TYPEWRITERS ) and I kind of liked it, so I'm lucky in that I caught the wave early enough and computers agree with me, most of the time!

I worked as a paralegal for about seven years after college, and I followed that up by landing a job doing medical collections and billing for a collection agency. I did that for eight years, and while I got laid off from that position, I was actually relieved to be leaving that job as it really stressed me out. Unfortunately after that, I was only able to land temp positions and odd jobs and found myself falling behind financially to the point I had to move back to my hometown last fall. Ironically, the job situation in my hometown was far worse than the place I left, yet I was able to find a job in just three weeks processing health insurance claims, and I've been doing it ever since. It pays okay, but I really would like to move back to the big city.

Somehow I missed this post this morning. I'm going to look into some classes. They offer some great ones. They have a build your own bike class, which looks great, but I think you have take a welding class first.
I guess I had some art in high school, but not metal sculpture. We didn't have a shop class either, which is a shame because it helps explain why I don't have any cool skills like carpentry. a psychotic is someone who just figured out what's going on

Don't worry, you'll get it. Practice, practice, practice. My college didn't have computers when I was there in the late 70s-early 80s. I did everything by hand until my company made the switch in 1995, and I learned on the job. Didn't take long to figure shit out. The more you know, the more money you'll make. My job uses MACs, but I have a PC at home.
I did most of the Scarface boxers and lounge pants at these links using Photoshop & Illustrator.
