It's a lot like the reason why vegetarians tend to be often depressed and get overweight even if they think they are living "healthy".

This is like the stupidest thing I've ever read in the GD forums, and I'm not even vegetarian...

This thread is making me thirsty.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Anxiety and depression are very common amongst people that are idealistic or perfectionist. How that shows up in the mortality rates is a different deal altogether, but it's definitely a well-known fact in the mental health sector.

If this is "the stupidest thing you've ever read in the GD forums" then I suggest you do some reading.

The fact that some pompous know-it-all wrote about it doesn't mean it's true, or even worth my time to begin with wink mental health sector??? pompous nuts...

I said it was stupid because it is, sorry, and hilarious: THERE ARE NO fat vegetarians falloff and they are not idealists, they just choose not to feed on animals, that's a huge difference;

I guess we agree to disagree, anyway. Some years ago I read somewhere that regular masturbation is helpful against the prostate cancer; some months ago I read somewhere that regular masturbation could provoke prostate cancer rolleyes; you can't trust mass-media science, you just can't...

And I'll stick with what I said: I respect those who drink because they WANT to drink (birthdays, New Year's Eve, certain celebrations, etc.) not those who NEED to drink. And I doubt that an abstemious is gonna die younger than the average couch potato who drinks three or even four beers every day...that's nonsense, just blah blah blah...How old was Einstein (a famous vegetarian and abstemious) when he died?

Peace

my sister is obese, she is a vegetarian, because she still eats bread and cheese and sugar, and beer etc. Possibly it's harder for a vegan to be overweight hmmm

I have read also, that enjoying things in moderation and not denying yourself is the key to balance.

I've been myself an overweight vegetarian for years and so have been many of my friends. However, vegetarians and their diets is not the point of this discussion. I made the comparison in order to point out that people who have chosen a life style that is considered to be a healthy one do not automatically end up being healthier than the rest due to a wide variety of reasons.

I'm interested in what explains the statistics and unfortunately people always draw too big conclusions from them. Statistical curiosities are always explained by taking the picture into account. The article itself does deal with the socio-economical and psychological factors to quite an extent, although the concluding sentence comes off sort of stupid or even irresponsible. Maybe it was meant just as a joke, I don't know.

I'm a little surprised about the mortality rate, but definitely not by the statement that people who practice abstinence are often depressed. It's a clinical fact. It's easy to observe even if you aren't familiar with that field. Perhaps the mortality rate itself is really just explained by that there are so very few people that do not drink at all? The number is bound to look inflated when you count in the cases that have had considerable trouble with their mental and physical health all through their lives, and so on.

First - I myself am an overweight vegetarian. I was an obese vegetarian. I know overweight and obese vegans as well. Consuming meat isn't the only thing that will cause a person to be overweight. There are all kinds of unhealthy habits people can take up that have nothing to do with not eating meat.

Second - we all know correlation does not equal causation. Because there are proven detrimental affects of alcohol abuse, the article is seeking to understand what other traits those who consume alcohol all have in common that those who abstain don't. Whether or not those traits are separate from the alcohol consumption or a result of it remain unknown. I think a little bit of both makes sense.

I'm sorry, but I don't see any point in your rants. I don't really see either what these random attacks have to do with what I've stated. As if I would have been telling people that drinking alcohol is beneficial for them in some direct manner or that statistics would somehow rationalize my own alcohol consumption. This is just ridiculous.

I made the "unsubstantiated" comment in reference to your claim about there being no overweight vegetarians. There is clearly no basis for such claims in reality and obviously there cannot be any documentation for it either. I should have used the word "false", but "unsubstantiated" doesn't really mean not having provided links on the internet either. But in case you really are too damn lazy to do any of your own research here is the most encompassing one in English:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19686521

Study group of 38,000 people in Norway, also referenced to by an earlier article by TIME magazine. I guess it was too much work to navigate through a couple of links for you. But like pointed out above me, statistics do not usually inform us too much of causation. However, someone pointing out to you that such statistics exist doesn't warrant you the right to attack that person.
