HAS ANYONE SEEN THE MOVIE "BABY BOY" BY JOHN SINGLETON??? I'm usually opposed to anything starring Tyrese as I think this dude can't act his way out of a 40 ounce but I was pleasantly surprised by this film. It co-stars Taraji P. Henson and Ving Rames (whom I still adore even though he fucked himself career wise) and is about a young inner city man who has never grown up and is suddenly faced with the harsh realities of adult life such as parenting, fidelity in one's relationship, financial independence and momma's new boyfriend.
For those of you who have seen it...do you think this was among Singleton's best or worse films and do you think the message about black men in the hood lacking maturity and being irresponsible was adequately conveyed?

I thought Snoop Dog was adequately cast as the bitch ass ex-con/ex-boyfriend of Taraji's character.

Its one of my favorite movies. I even watched the DVD commentary.
I think its an adequate portrayal. Not just men in the hood I found...my ex coworker (a young white girl with a young son) told me it was pretty much her bio. "Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...NOBODY!"

Love the movie! Mainly for the eyecandy factor of Tyrese
I'm a Taraji P. Henson fan as well.
I wouldn't say it was John Singleton's worst.
I think his message is accurate for some black males in the hood, not all of 'em.
*in Taraji's voice. "Ooooh JODY!!"

Was this Taraji's first film?
I love the way the film starts out with Tyrese being this grown man in a womb being strangled by his mom's umbilical cord. That shocked me at first and offended me for about a minute because I thought is represented Jody's mother holding him back as a man which is totally not the case in the film. Or is it?

i quote that movie often especially the scene where Ving Rhames is cooking nude in the kitchen "Want some breakfast?"
How is it you feel? | |

All I got to say is Ving was sexier than a mugg in this! I love a nucca smokin' on a black n' mild (for some odd reason that shit is sexy to me!)

He went from winning a Golden Globe for his role as Don King, and turning the award down in favor of old ass Jack Lemon, to roles in Striptease and Con-Air which both flopped. Enter his sidekick roles in Mission Impossible to that rat trap Dawn of the Dead. I mean seriously....isn't he a better actor than that? The only roles worthy of his talent have been Only In America, Baby Boy, Rosewood and Undisputed and the latter is even a stretch. I believe with all my gut that he made poor choices and that there wasn't a lack of opportunity. He could give Denzel a run for his money if so chose.

Ahhh....so essentially he was getting evicted and he was trying to squat.

Melvin scared me when he ran up behind Jody and damn near strangled him then said "if we was in the yard, I'd make ya get on ya knees!" I was like Melvin was jackin' booty in the pen?? Say it isn't so!!!
And he planted weed in his lady's yard. So trifling. But it was good to see he and Jody become friends in the end.

Odd reason my ass... you know you was checkin on those muscles and that firm ass on ole Ving. And that nucca was sangin' too? Shit....let a dude fix me breakfast in the nude and seranade my ass...we could have a brief relationship.

There were no grandparents in this movie (of Jody). I don't care who you are or where you live but if you are a poor and unemployed youth with out of wedlock children - YOU GOT GRANNY LIFTING THE LOAD!
And I didn't even realize that Jody's friend was played by Cuba Gooding's brother. The gene pool is a funny thing.

Really? I remember when dude was on Nickelodeon's Wild and Crazy Kids "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

I remeber him on there.
He was on that short lived tv show One on One with Dj turned rapper turned actor Flex. The same guy who butchered the portrayal of Michael Jackson for some VH1 piece of crap movie.

When his mom tells him he should leave the nest Jody throws it back at her saying she never left the nest.
The only thing she says about his father is. "Your daddy was a thug"
Maybe he's dead "Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...NOBODY!"
