Fall fashion "don't" - camel

Okay, so...a lot of designers are doing stuff in camel this fall. Do not let them trick you into buying it! Or...if you must buy it, make sure you know what you're doing. no no no!

Yes, camel looks wonderful and rich - on the hanger and in photography. But I'm here to tell you that practically nobody looks good in it. It's just too yellow for most complexions. You have to be a natural, orange-y redhead for it to work. Let's see...how many of those exist? Oh, right - almost none!

So unless that happens to be your coloring, your best bet is camel skirts and trousers. These are better choices because the color isn't next to your face. Paired with claret, cardinal red, warm-tinged browns or black, camel can look okay. Just make sure that, if you go this route, you aren't buying actual camel fabric - it should be wool or a blend in which wool predominates. True camel is a very delicate fiber - it will start to show wear very quickly over your knees, elbows and rear end.

And don't have camel dry cleaned unless it is truly soiled. Animal fibers are naturally hygienic - just give garments made from them a light brushing from time to time.

This fall fashion tip is a public service of Wednesday's Hag.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

No. It's like cashmere, wool, or alpaca. They use the fiber - they don't skin the animal.

Military-inspired stuff is huge. Hardware (buckles on boots, etc.) is everywhere. Shirring, flounces, ruffles and other embellishments are still important for women - but instead of being their own thing, they tend to be paired with menswear-inspired pieces.

Overall, there's a lot more structure to clothing right now - which is in keeping with the overall trend toward more conservative clothing.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I have a camel hair coat... it's a peacoat and I always wear it with scarves that have rich tones. (mostly blueish reds or deep purple)

But you are right, I only look good in my camel hair coat if I still have my tan and my hair is out (I have natural super black hair) so the color doesn't wash me completely out. Wow that coat is almost "vintage" now since I've had it for years... glad I kept it.

I can't wear it that much..... it pills to damn much, mad I have to brush the fabric after its been worn, just like the boiled wool sweater coat I have.

Camelhair is a very soft fiber and, because it's so delicate, it generally isn't woven very tightly. That makes it prone to pilling and faster wear than harder-finished fabrics like, for example, wool gabardine.

Yeah, that makes sense... I don't think I'll buy any more clothing items made with camel hair , its too high maintenance. It does feel nice though. cloud9

Back in my TV days, I had a suit made of 100% camelhair. (Camel is a horrible color on me, but with a black turtleneck or a red blouse, it looked great on television.) That thing showed wear the minute I carried it out of the store. rolleyes

But, you're right - it was wonderful to touch.

Yeah, it was very expensive. Which is why I continued to wear it even after I figured out that the color was awful on me. lol

It was a skirted suit. I used to wear it with a charcoal/ivory/camel argyle sweater that had a cranberry-colored intarsia running through it - and cranberry colored t-strap heels.

wave sexy But I only wear black so it doesn't matter. Had a camel hair coat once and it looked great, but I just feel comfortable in black. I gave it to my sis.
