I should go on vacation more often

I took a couple days off earlier this week and when I got back to work, I had an email from a former colleague asking me if I might be interested in an opening at the company he and several other former colleagues have gone to.

It looks like a great opportunity - more autonomous, more collaborative, and with a chance to just be more creative again. (My current job used to be all of those things, but has had every bit of life sucked out of it in the last several years.) It's also less than half the distance from home as my current job.

If they offer me the job, and come anywhere close on salary, benefits and whatnot, I'mma jump! nod

Do it! woot! If they can get the salary right the commute change alone will make it worthwhile/better. Anything past that is just bonus on top of bonus.

Yup!

What I have to do is sit down and tally exactly what I get now - including the 401K match, bonus, etc., so I know what it's going to take.

Thanks, all. cool

Of course, my biggest challenge will be not telling them what I really think about their latest campaign for their women's clothing. Gotta wait 'til I get the job for that.

I just got an email from the woman who is leaving the position I'm interested in. (She's also a former co-worker - that place is crawling with them! lol ) She said she's loved being there and actually hates the thought of leaving. It's just that her husband got a job out of state, so they're opting for his career at this point. I was pretty happy to hear that.

An interesting thing, though...she says they never made her a senior copywriter, and that there are no plans to take the position senior. And yet, when they contacted me about the job, they clearly said it was a senior position. So I have to get that 100% nailed down. I don't care all that much about titles per se, but it never looks good on a resume to take a "step back."

The creative director there was the first person I interviewed with for my current job (geez...14 years ago already eek ), so he knows me and what I can do. When he left here to go there, we had a going away party for him. There was a copy of the catalog for the place he was going to - and we were all looking at it. He looked at me and said, "You could write this kind of copy falling out of bed in the morning." lol

He already likes my work - and I'm fairly confident that he knows what it'll take to get me. cool

Okay, so...the meeting next Friday is just lunch with the copy director (the guy who contacted me about the job in the first place). Provided that goes well (no reason it shouldn't - he told me the interviews are just a formality as far as he and the other guy I know are concerned), there'll be a formal interview with their creative director - the one person in this entire deal I don't know. I need a resume and samples for her (the guys don't need them), but I can just throw that together over the weekend.

Sounds like it's mine to lose.

nod Especially because it's something that you do (the work, that is). Gotta be careful with those until AFTER you're hired. Then you can berate years of other people's hard work. lol

Criminy!

When I merged my LinkedIn accounts this morning, a former art director colleague of mine emailed to say they're looking for a writer and a copy director at the company he works for! eek

I don't think I'll go for those, though. The products I'd be writing about are just...well...awful. disbelief

I interviewed for the copy director position there years ago - and actually withdrew my application. I just knew I couldn't go there - even though everyone who's left the company I currently work for to go there just loooooooves it.

So I had my not-exactly-an-interview lunch today. The job sounds great, the money is there, and they really, really want me. We still have to go through a formal interview process (because I don't know all the decision makers).

It'll be a lot more work than my current job - but I think it'll be more satisfying. And the company is growing, so there's greater potential there than where I am.

It's looking real good. cool

Last night, when I went from excited to shake (as I invariably do when I start thinking about a big change like this), I started thinking, "But...but...the clothes aren't cute. pout " (And they really aren't - there aren't but a few very basic things that I'd ever buy. I mean...this company sells overalls for women. disbelief )

I had to haul myself up short and say, "Look - nobody's saying you have to wear any of it. You don't have to wear it to sell the crap out of it. All of these clothes are right for someone. Just give her the information and let her make the decision. As long as you're getting paid - and nobody's asking you to lie about the products, what do you care?" shrug
