Batman Beyond

Any other comic geeks fondly remember this animated series? It's one of my favorite superhero-based cartoons ever. The way they managed to tie it into the Justice League Unlimited continuity was pretty nice for fans. The series had a great look and feel to it, too.

I just found out the entire series is finally being released on DVD in November (just in time for the holidays; woo-hoo!). At a hundred bucks, it's a bit pricey, but it includes nine discs. I don't think it includes the Return of the Joker movie, which I thought was incredible.

So who else liked Batman Beyond?

Haven´t heard about this before. Is this some futuristic concept of the Batman story?

Do you know whether the new story by Neal Adams has come out yet? I think it´s called "Odyssey".

He´s one of the best Batman writers and artists ever. He was behind the "Lazarus Pit" storyline in the late 70s.

I love Neal Adams. One of the true great, distinctive comics artists. I haven't had a chance to check out Reconcilers yet; I'm still kicking myself for not making it over to his booth at Comic-Con. When I walked by one time, there was no one there and it would have been the perfect time to talk to him. But I was late for a meeting, so I had to rush by.

Here's the press release on it if you want more info on it:

VIKING WARRIOR PRESS ANNOUNCES THE PREMIER OF "THE RECONCILERS" GRAPHIC NOVEL FROM COMICS LEGEND NEAL ADAMS, MULTI-AWARD WINNING WRITER/ACTOR ERIK JENSEN and TWO-TIME EISNER NOMINEE SHEPHERD HENDRIX AT COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL in SAN DIEGO July 22, 2010.

Thrilling, provocative, and timely, THE RECONCILERS from comics legend Neal Adams, acclaimed artist Shepherd Hendrix, award winning writer/co-creator Erik Jensen, and co-creators R. Emery Bright and Jens Pil Pilegaard, is a graphic novel of epic adventure, with a compelling visual style, and uncanny topical punch.

It is 2165. The world has entered a new dark age as ordinary people scratch out a living in the squalid ruins of their grandparents’ civilizations. The concept of nationhood is dead. Mega-Corps rule all aspects of life, and maintain control by mining and selling the only energy source left – “Liberty Ore,” a rare and mysterious blue-green substance buried beneath the Moon’s surface.

After a protracted and crippling war between Mega-Corporations, EXECUTIVE OUTCOME (EO), a powerful, enigmatic security organization declares military conflict illegal. Pursuant to EO’s Book of Outcomes, disputes between corporations may only be resolved through Reconciliation – bloody, globally televised trial-by-combat spectacles designed to enthrall and pacify the masses. The “best of the best” of these professional killing teams is owned by one MAXIMILLIAN SOKOR, professional despot, hero of the Holy Outcome, and Executive Chairman of the largest of the Major Corporations.
But when SEAN HEXHAMMER, a working class “ore-jockey” for a small-time wildcat mining outfit discovers the largest Liberty Ore deposit known to man; his actions shake the tenuous order of the world and bring the tormented past Hexhammer had buried roaring to the surface. Hexhammer is forced to return to the violent life he abandoned and assemble an unlikely team of Reconcilers to fight for the future.

It’s Pale Rider meets Blade Runner; if “Pale Rider” had been set in a dystopian 23rd Century it would probably look a little something like “The Reconcilers”.

Guided by comics legend Neal Adams, the graphic novel’s creative team is comprised of notable up-and-comers in the comics and entertainment industry: multi-award winning writer/actor Erik Jensen, Two-time Eisner nominated artist Shepherd Hendrix, award winning writer-director Jens Pil Pilegaard and actor-writer-producer R. Emery Bright.

The graphic novel’s heart lies in the diversity of all of the “Vikings and Warriors” involved in the project. The company is ethnically, culturally and spiritually varied, with associates hailing from various part of the globe – Liberia, Denmark, Turkey, Central America, and the Islands of Cuba, Manhattan and California.

Viking Warrior is donating a portion of the profits from book sales at Comic-Con to victims of the Gulf oil spill. The graphic novel which retails at $14.99 is currently available for pre-order on Amazon or via Pay Pal at www.TheReconcilers.com. The book is expected in stores this Fall.

He´s one of the best Batman writers and artists ever. He was behind the "Lazarus Pit" storyline in the late 70s.

And here's the press release on Batman Beyond, which tells all about the series. It's a futuristic tale with a new Batman being guided by the old one.

BURBANK, CA (August 18, 2010) – Warner Bros. Animation’s breakthrough
series Batman Beyond comes to DVD for the first time in its entirety.
Featuring DC Comics’ iconic hero, Batman, Batman Beyond: The Complete
Series presents nearly 20 hours of animated action spread over 52
episodes, as well as all-new bonus featurettes and a 24-page, 8”x 12”
collectible booklet. Batman Beyond: The Complete Series will be
distributed by Warner Home Video on November 23, 2010 as a nine-disc
limited edition DVD set for $99.98 (SRP).

Batman Beyond: The Complete Series centers on Terry McGinnis, an
ordinary teenager ... until his father is mysteriously murdered.
Suspecting foul play at his father's company, Wayne/Powers
Corporation, Terry meets Bruce Wayne and learns of a secret identity
hidden for decades. Now too old to don the cape and cowl as Batman,
Wayne refuses to help – so Terry does what any brash young kid would
do: steal the Bat-suit and take matters into his own hands! Vowing to
avenge his father's death, Terry dons the high-tech suit tricked out
with jetpacks, a supersensitive microphone and even camouflage
capabilities in search of his father's assassin. It’s 52 action-packed
episodes following the adventures of the partnership between an
ex-crimefighter and his apprentice, starring Will Friedle (Boy Meets
World) as Terry McGinnis and, reprising his seminal role, Kevin Conroy
(Batman: The Animated Series) as Bruce Wayne.

Casting throughout the series’ 52 episodes featured award winners from
feature films, primetime television and the Broadway stage – from Paul
Winfield, Stockard Channing and Seth Green to
William H. Macy, Wayne Brady and Teri Garr – not to mention George
Lazenby (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service), Dan Castellaneta (The
Simpsons), Jodi Benson (The Little Mermaid), George Takei (Star Trek)
and Henry Rollins (the front man for the rock band, Black Flag).

Three new bonus features created specifically for the Batman Beyond:
The Complete Series are:

TOMORROW KNIGHT: THE BATMAN REBORN
The "Batman Beyond" creative team gives you a peek into the character
of Terry McGinnis, and what made him worthy to become the new Caped
Crusader.

GOTHAM: CITY OF THE FUTURE
A look at Gotham City, circa 2039, and how the team built a realistic
vision of the near future while remaining true to the city they
created in Batman: The Animated Series.

THE HIGH TECH HERO
Explore the technology behind the Bat-suit, its amazing powers and the
real world science that inspired it.

The collection will also contain the DC 75th anniversary documentary,
Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics.

Wow, that sounds good. I´m really into futuristic stuff, and this storyline sounds promising.

Thanks for the info.

Here´s a link about the new Batman series that Neal Adams wants to do:

When I think of Neal Adams, I always think of THIS picture that I used to have as a huge poster on my wall when I was a kid:

I couldn't really get into it when it was on tv. I think I was comparing it to Batman: The Animated Series. I have a coworker who loves it though. Maybe I'll give it another try.

I used to LOVE this show. I definitely think it ended way too soon, as there were so many more stories they could've told. The fact that they had Terry be Bruce's son was a little bit of a stretch, but other than that, grade A stuff.

The flashback scene in the middle...one of the best moments of Batman on film ever.

You should let your kid decide because every generation has a different idea of Batman. Maybe our idea of Batman ( gray and blue ) is not his idea of a good costume.

I used to be a pro when it comes to superhero costumes. I really made a couple of very authentic looking costumes when I was a kid.

For instance, Batman´s costume in the 70s had these small capsules on his belt, containing little gadgets and gimmicks. I used the little yellow capsules in "Kinder Surprise" eggs as an substitute for them and made a nice Batman belt. wink

[img:$uid]http://www.eierlei.de/images/article/rundumsei/steg/kapselorange.gif[/img:$uid]

You know...the old belt that looked a bit like THIS:

[img:$uid]http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aF72ivaEJI/SxAqncS2O5I/AAAAAAAAD-s/lA03-uuxiqw/s1600/Detective_395.jpg[/img:$uid]

But, as I said, that was in the 1970s and we were humble like that. These days, kids are no longer humble and grateful, so you better buy him THIS instead of messing around with Kinder Suprise capsules lol :

[img:$uid]http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/images/ba/batman-begins-utility-belt.jpg[/img:$uid]

Or just show him different costumes from different eras and let him decide.

Well then, if he´s never even seen him before, just come up with something like THIS:
