Pitbull and Chihuahua Update Some of you may recall my dilemma regarding my new Pit Bull puppy that I posted a month or so ago. So far the pup is developing nicely, obeying, showing excellent temperament. However, unfortunately, I will have to re-home my Chihuahua. The Chihuahua is so jealous, she's having separation anxiety just when I'm in the house but not in her presence. This anxiety is manifesting itself by her pooping in her crate, and everywhere else. Each morning it takes me about 20 minutes to an hour to clean up all the poop. First it started with her just urinating in her crate, then I moved the crate to the bathroom, and left the crate door open so that she could just walk over to her wee wee pad and pee and poop when she feels the urge.
So she did that for a few days and then decided that she wanted to take a crap everywhere in the bathroom, and still poop in the crate, and lay in it . I've tried everything that you can think to suggest. So I called my vet, and he prescribed anti-anxiety pills for the Chihuahua, so it's been 2 days and no poop in the crate, nor on the bathroom floor. However anxiety pills are only temporary. She's got to get used to my time being divided, and me not constantly being availabe to her. She cries for me starting at 5am and if I dont come down immediately, poop, pee, and more poop. It's gotten to the point where now the Pit Bull smells her pee, and has started peeing in her own crate, guess she figures that if the Chi does it, it must be ok. The chihuahua will not pee outside, even if her bladder is about to burst she will wait until she gets inside the house and pee on her pad. If I just leave her outside for hours at a time and let nature take it's course, she will eat pine leaves and god knows whatever else, and she will have the legitimate runs. So training this pup to go outside just is not working either.
This Chihuahua needs someone who can give her undivided attention and who doesnt mind allowing her to sleep in their bed, and who does not work, and who does not have other animals in the home. Before I made my decision to re-home the Chi, I really considered carefully if I was trying to get her out of the way because now I have another dog. Even If i didn't have the Pit, I still couldnt take the demanding-ness of the Chihuahua. She's a sweet dog that has gone soooo far beyond discipline,, that there is nothing left for me to do for her. The more time I spend with her the more time she wants and needs.
The pitbull loves her, and I fear that the Pit may act out once the Chihuahua is rehomed. The Pit plays very roughly with the Chihuahua and that is another concern of mine, eventhough the pit is only playing, she can still accidently cause damage she weighs 24 pounds, and the Chihuahua weighs under 4 pounds. Once she was too rough with the Chihuhaua and saw that she hurt her, and walked over to her and just started licking her feveriously, licking her wounds. So the Pit means no harm. But I think the best thing for the Chihuahua is that she find another loving owner who doesnt has as many "quirks" as I have ( can sleep in owners bed, doesnt mind getting up at 5am, and doesnt mind cleaning up shit that results from an anxiety). Maybe she does not need an owner with a dog. Although when I got this pit I saw that there were also 2 other pits and 2 other Chihuahas there and none of them had any battle scars, and they seemed to get along well, I just cant seem to re-create that. I called the breeder, and she tried to reassure me that once the pit gets out of the puppy stage, she wont be as rough. But what about the anxiety filled Chihuahua. Today she growled and nipped at the pit because the Chi was sitting on my couch next to me and the Pit walked over to lay on the floor at my feet.
I feel very sad, because later today I have to return 4 calls from potential buyers. The chihuahua is 6 months now, so best to rehome her now, while she's still young and wanted. One thing that I've learned from this experience is to never ever try to raise two puppies at the same time. It's a nightmare. Whereas I thought the Pit would help the Chihuahua with the lonliness, she hates the Pit, but the pit loves her. What a bummer.
As far as the pit is concerned, I initially was concerned about the space in my home, I've since learned from other pit owners that my space is adequate ( I guess i felt I needed a ranch or something), also I've been advised by other pit owners that their own pits are "house dogs" and only go out to be walked. When I return to work will be the true test for the pit, she will need to be crated while I'm away. Pit owners tell me that I should have no problems in this area. I will not leave the dog out on the deck, I've found that out of fear people are mean, they throw poisonous meat at the dogs, and she can be attacked by some wild abused and untamed pits as well. So far she's a goofy happy go lucky puppy, she's 4 months now so we'll see how she continues to develope. Just updating folks on the status, and I guess venting a little too. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

Chihuahuas are high maintenance dogs!
Glad you have found out for yourself that pits are wonderful.

Are you going to do a home visit of the potential owner or verify their vet records?

Now if I can stop the darn Pit from eating her "poop" I'd be in business. I first used this pill that I got at Petsmart, seemed to work for about a month, now she's munching again. Sigh. Theres another product called Forbid thats a lil more expensive, but I think I will try.
Also the dog has munched down half of the crap by the time I have walked to the kitchen to get a bag and paper to scoop it up with. I mean it's not even left out there for 3 minutes and already she's biting it. That is so fregging gross. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

The chihuahua's behavior could be easily modified with some training techniques.
It's not that the chihuahua needs to be re-homed because she "needs" undivided attention and to sleep in her owner's bed. All of that is bad behavior for a dog and should be corrected with consistent techniques.
It sounds to me like you're not exactly willing to put in the time it takes to have a well-behaved dog. It's not all playing, petting and treats.

It sounds to me that you dont know how much effort, traning, and assistance from others that I've had to put into training this dog. And now she's starting to corrupt my other dog. Everybody has what they are willing to put up with, and what their breaking points are. I'm at my end. If you can handle such a dog..hey that would mean that you are more talented in "this particular area" than myself and the professionals that I've consulted with. That's a great thing. I can't read all that. I'll just say chiuahua.

I'm probably not, no, definitely not more talented than any professional. I've watched some Dog Whisperer, that's about it.
Seems I was wrong. | |

I'm sure Cesar would agree that Chihuahuas are one of the most stubborn breeds.

Chihuahua has been re-homed effective today. She was given to a Vet Technician that I have known for a few years that works at my Vet's office.
The creepiest thing is that I was walking my Pit today, and another Chihuahua started following us, and despite my protest, he followed us home. I closed that door with the quickness. I'm a Chihuahua magnet I guess. But NO MORE Chihuahua's for me. They are just not the kind of breed that I need at this stage in my life. Most dogs seek to "please their owners"...Chihuahua's want to be pleased.
The re-homing was "bitter sweet". I loved that little dog, but I just could not get with the behaviors that she was displaying. It's something about when an animal repeatedly shits and pisses in your home despite all efforts that you make that will make you harden your heart to them, despite all the other redeeming qualities that they may have. Unless of course you don't have an issue dealing with perpetual shit and piss. If somehow the new owner is able to break her out of that seperation anxiety, random peeing and crapping, she has a darn good loveable dog on her hands. I will miss you sweet doggie! I'm dead serioius. I'm like what's with the damned Chihuahua stalking me and my dog. This was two days in a row. Only today he made it to my door. Yesterday his young azz owner ran after his lil azz and leashed him. I'm not sure why folks just let their dogs roam the streets it boggles my mind. I have a chihuahua.. Best dog Ive EVER had! Not stubborn, not naughty, they dont seem to be as "smart" as some other breeds but their cute factor makes up for everything else! they get very attached to one person.. Some people think they are yappy, but mine isnt at all... They are like any other breed, you have to spend time with a dog to have a well behaved dog... You just cant throw them in a room or a kennel and expect a dog to know how to behave... ~~~~~ Oh that voice...incredible....there should be a musical instrument called George Michael... ~~~~~

they are very cute! I actually find them to be very, very smart, almost manipulative and crafty, they know how to bat those big brown eyes and shake their way to forgiveness. They make me laugh because even when they weigh 5 pounds they act like they weigh 100!
and yes all dogs (and people!) need home training....

I don't know that they are "not smart" it just seems that it takes much longer for them to process new information and learn. But once they know it...they know it..and they can be very bright little doggies. But my gosh there are some areas of learning that some Chihuahuas seem to put barriers up and will not budge no matter how you try to dice through it. They "get by" because of their cuteness and constant giving of affection. If a Chihuahua were the size of a Great Dane....good grief @ the daughting task of working with that dog.
Out here where I live there are sooo many Chihuahuas, they are very loyal little doggies to bad things didn't work out with mine, but I'm sure she's in a home better suited for her needs. Thought about her all last night, but was relieved that I was able to sleep for a span of 4 hours, and when I came downstairs for the first time in 4 months did not have to clean up any pee or poo mashed onto places where it should not be. Came downstairs and let the other puppy outside to do her business, and then crawled back into the bed to catch some more Zzzzz'z. Haven't been able to do that in 4 months.
The Vet Tech told me that the Chihuahua that she had refuses to potty outside also, so she was ok with the dog always using the pad. She said she was also prepared to clean poop up from "wherever" as long as she had to . Guess she's the "Chihuahua Whisperer". Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. I've always said any animal that has figured how to live rent free and get free food is obviously smarter than humans
