Don't people think that Walter Sickert may have been Jack the Ripper? Looking at the pic I don't think I would be too suprised if he was. eyepop

No, they're my victims. I killed them in the 1880s. biggrin

Patricia Cornwell just a wrote a fairly boring new book detailing exactly why Walter Sickert WAS Jack the Ripper.

Yes. If you can get over the shit writing, read Patricia Cornwell's book about it.

I wish I'd not read it, and just caught the thing on BookTV I watched last night. rolleyes It gave me all I wanted to know, anyhow, and I didn't have to read her shitty writin'!

I enjoyed her first couple of books but they really dropped off in quality after that. Now she just churns them out because she has such a faithful following.

Her theory seems to be absolutely true... the DNA evidence and all that helps a lot. Sickert was more than likely Jack the Ripper.

Walter Sickert was a minor impressionist. He was friends with Degas and a student of Whistler. I can't wait to read the book. I think it's entirely possible he is Jack the Ripper.

There is some VERY compelling evidence in there... I hope you like her writing though... I can't really get into her style.

While I agree that Sickert's talents were not much better than a psychopath, I can't see him doing something like that without getting caught redhanded.

After all, he was "caught" at being a second rate painte time and time again. From some website:

In the years after his death in 1942, Sickert was somewhat forgotten. However, he began to receive a great deal of attention in the latter half of the twentieth century from a series of paintings that he produced form 1908 to 1909. The series, which featured murdered prostitutes alone in a bedroom with a man, led many to believe that Sickert was the infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper. Although most critics dismiss these allegations as pure rumor, detective novelist Patricia Cornwell is still determined to prove his guilt. In recent years, Cornwell spent about $4 million on Sickert's paintings and his painting table. She had these items inspected, and subsequently destroyed in an effort to find DNA that might link him to the murders. She found none, but is still determined and says that she is "staking my reputation on this" (Stalking 1).

The fact that this series compelled Cornwell to jump to such a conclusion might have actually pleased Sickert because of his desire to be thought of as a literary painter.

Cornwell claims that Sikert's DNA was found on multiple Jack the Ripper Letters and that the DNA from the letters was compared to DNA on various Walter Sickert letters. She also claims that Jack the Ripper used paper with the same watermark as Sickert and that the handwriting matched at times while he wrote left-handed at other times to create confusion. etc.

Well, if you want to get technical, it was mitochondria DNA, I believe, which means it's not entirely accurate...

The watermarks could've been from someone else. Though, heh heh, as I'm sure you've read, that's also highly unlikely.

There is a lot of her evidence that would have to be a pretty big coincidence that someone besides Mr. Sickert did it. biggrin

Mind you, she's found all sorts of new evidence. New letters from Sickert out in California. She said on BookTV that the paperback would include all of the new information she's found...It keeps rolling in now. biggrin

I read the book, and while I didn't much care for her writing style, the content did fascinate me. Am I convinced that Sickert was Jack The Ripper? Well, let me put it this way: If I was on a jury trying Walter Sickert, and I was presented this evidence, the defence would have to really work damn hard to create reasonable doubt. All the evidence (not just the DNA) seems to point to Sickert.

The one argument that Cornwell made that I'm 100% convinced of, is that the Ripper had far more victims than he was ever credited with. Cornwell presented way too many cases, that were previously discounted, with evidence that they were commited by the same killer. It really makes sense, since serial killers don't generally just stop their murders. many other women, and even a few young boys, were victims of the same killer as the Ripper murders. Of that, I have no doubt.

Oh, dont try to be nice to me just because I made a compliment lol

I'm not yet comfortable with my atavar. Never wanted one until suddenly I started to feel naked. So yesterday Sam came in. Well, I didnt even know it was Sam the Eagle as there was no Sesame Street for me when I was young. (Lack of TV...Im not that old...) I just liked the guys look.

Now Im stuck with an atavar everybody in here seems to have childhood memories associated with. Very cool indeed hrmph

So much for my street-cred
