Report: Cancer is the world's costliest disease

Cancer is the world's top "economic killer" as well as its likely leading cause of death, the American Cancer Society contends in a new report it will present at a global cancer conference in China this week.

Cancer costs more in productivity and lost life than AIDS, malaria, the flu and other diseases that spread person-to-person, the report concludes.

Cancer's economic toll was $895 billion in 2008 — equivalent to 1.5 percent of the world's gross domestic product, the report says. That's in terms of disability and years of life lost — not the cost of treating the disease, which wasn't addressed in the report.

The World Health Organization has long predicted that cancer would overtake heart disease this year as the leading cause of death. About 7.6 million people died of cancer in 2008, and about 12.4 million new cases are diagnosed each year.

I remember when he was rude to some people that disagreed with him because they believed in God and had different political opinions. The people were respectful, but he still acted like a jerk. He truly is an angry, bitter, hateful man and the world will be better off when he finally croaks.

I have a feeling that Catherine is talking to her lawyer on a regular basis. She has to make sure her and the kids don't get the short end of the stick when the will is read. I know she was just biding her time until this day came. She's going to get PAID!

His first paragraph didn't do him any favors with the man upstairs, either.

I don't wish death on smokers. Many smokers are great people who made a bad choice early in lkife and now can't escape the addiction. Others just don't believe the facts, statistics and empirical data, or think that they will be in the group that smokes with no harm. And maybe they will be, who knows? That doesn't make them bad people at all, just people that are taking a risk that I would never dream of taking.

I never did wish death on smokers. I'm just not surprised that he has cancer because he's a chain smoker. He knew what he was doing was wrong, but he did it anyway. Besides, he has plenty of money, so he can afford the best healthcare, so he may have a chance. People need to stop putting him on a pedestal just because he's a celeb. I feel bad for people that can't afford decent healthcare because of the screwed up healthcare system in this country. Spoiled rich/famous people get no sympathy from me when they do stupid shit.

The article I read about this said Michael Douglas smoked half a pack a day and had quit. Half a pack a day is nobody's idea of a chain smoker.

Hmmmm. Interesting post. You do make some interesting points.

Some people are upset only because they like Michael Douglas. They don't realize that other people don't care because we live in reality. Many celebs are self-absorbed and superficial. They don't care about us and haven't done anything for us. Don't expect the public to care because we've got our own problems to deal with. The celebs have plenty of money to buy their way out of trouble.

BTW, If Tom Cruise had a life-threatening illness, many people on the org would celebrate because they hate him, so people need to get off their self-righteous high horses.
