IceNine said: BorisFishpaw said: Yes, I think it's very true that very intelligent people are quite likely to have communication problems, especially with large groups.
The closer you are to average intelligence, the easier you find it to 'connect' on a social level with others. It's a bit like 'being on the same wavelength'. The further away from average intelligence you are, be that higher or lower, the more difficult it is to 'connect' with others. It is very common for highly intelligent people to be lacking a certain finess with social skills, especially when it comes to public speaking. It is also very common for them to feel a certain 'alienation' from the majority. True story... you will never believe this: I have a VERY hard time connecting with people and I am REALLY shitty at making small-talk and such. Social situations are sometimes extremely painful for me, as I cannot stand the banality of the conversations, nor can I even begin to comprehend the things that most people like. I feel like an alien at most times. True story... Shocking. I thought you had a very rich social life, and that all of your social group just liked to hang out with you while you sat at your computer. I very much understand what you're saying. I spent my (only) highschool homecoming under a table crying, until my friends brought the party down there with me. Just being in that room full of people with their STUPID clothes and STUPID interests and STUPID conversations was painful in an almost literal sense. Not much has changed since high school. I'm pretty misanthropic, because most people are just so boring, and have their values/priorities so screwed up. I manage to have a couple of very close, very interesting friends most of the time, and I managed to marry one of the smartest (and most socially inept) men I've ever known, and that's plenty good enough for me. But as you've noticed, it's a little different in this sort of setting. Some of the external crap falls away, and you don't get to choose who to interact with so much. The result is that you are appreciated more for who you really, intellectually, are. At the same time, you are forced to appreciate others for who they really, intellectually, are. It's nice. And Tony, you notice that in a forum where people can get to know who you really, intellectually, are (at least on some level), people just think you are fab. Isn't that nice? Doves, Mel!ssa

do you know what a pet peeve of mine is? I HATE IT
when people talk using big words that they have no flipping idea what they mean just to make themselves look or feel smart.also i hate it when you want 2 believe that a person is intelligent then they go & totally fuck it up by opening their great big waste of space for a mouth which obviously has no type of connection 2 their pea sized brain.(sorry i went off on kind of a tangent...my bad) **************************************************

I am sure it is very well possible. While i think of myself as rather intelligent, i have problems speaking b4 an audience or even speaking up in a group of people i'm not very familiar with. While i seem to do ok in discussions, whole speeches are more of a problem, especially in other languages because i have difficulties memorising large chuncks of text and somehow seem to loose the ability to think as quickly and clearly as i'm used to.
It's like u once learned a few songs on piano or guitar but aren't really able to play these instruments. Sometimes u can play the song from beginning to end, sometimes, all of a sudden, u can't remember what is the next note and u r stuck and u have to start all over bcause there is no way u can determine how to continue. What i do now is only write down a structure, no actual text, and try to b concious of what i'm saying and reason myself thru my speech. Sometimes it went horribly wrong, but i'm getting the hang of it. "It's better 2 B hated 4 what U R than 2 B loved 4 what U R not."

IceNine asked: Do you think that it is possible for someone to be extremely intelligent but not well spoken?
IN A NUTSHELL... Yes, of course. A correlation between intelligence (in many ways unmeasurable) and one's ability to speak in public is yet to be found. ASIDE: Spare a thought for crass over-articulation! For example, you couldn't get through an episode of 'Dawson's Creek' armed without three thesaurai and a couple of dictionaries. My two euros PS: Not that I watch the show or anything...!! M.2.K

I think it's definately possible. I've always had a problem with speaking in front of people but with written word, and other venues of creativity such as art, music, and acting I feel more at ease and can express my true self. I also took the IQ test and got a score of 120 and have always done well in school. follow me on twitter - Lovenharmony1 aka @DAPfan2c

I've seen it happen when the individual has never applied themselves in life and as they get older regret takes over because of what could have been. With all those things inside of you a lack of self confidence sets in.So when they are around other people they cant get there thoughts expressed out of fear.So they appear to others as they see themselves.
