Isn't it painfully obvious? I am looking for validation, as my written and verbal skills are painfully bad. In fact, I am hoping that I can amass enough signatures on this thread to provide myself with the courage to go on living, as I feel that my somewhat worse than average communication skills are limiting my potential for a happy life.

Do you think that it would be possible for a person to have a very high IQ and to be extremely intelligent but have a hard time speaking in public? I wonder if it is possible for a person who sometimes has trouble putting the right words together to actually be a very smart person.

What do you think?

I think that we are all born with a fixed degree of intelligence but people confuse intelligence with cleverness.

You have to learn to be clever - I'd rather be intelligent.

One major anxiety I had growing up, was that I spoke (still do to some degree) pigeon English...Hawaii-style. I didn't realize how much of an impact it would have on me, until I started getting into my teens. My father and I would visit my brother in California during the Christmas holidays, and the people around me would always made fun of the way I spoke. One person even told me that the way I speak makes me sound dumb, like I was totally uneducated because of the way I spoke.

Sorry for rambling, this was hard to explain.

Thanks, O. wink

Public speaking can stop a person in their tracks. There is definately a difference with speaking to several people, and speaking to a large group.

I can be a motormouth with people. mr.green I can also handle a classroom of people. Never tried speaking to say, several hundred, or several thousand at at time though.

Even the thought gets me jittery.

Hell yes. Everybody isn't adept at public speaking. According to those who teach it giving speeches, or speaking in front of a group is one of the most feared things in the world. It doesn't necessarily mean they're not intelligent. It has more to do with confidence and fear than anything else. And sometimes that lack of confidence and fear is a manifestation of different things for different people.

Yeah I think this is possible, some people just can't verbally express them selves as well as others, I use 2 always have this probably, I could never really say what I was trying 2 say and people have always mistaken me as somebody stupid, which in fact I was smarter then they where I just couldn't express myself in the same way they could, but 2 make a long story short I got better, but often whenever I do express whatever thought I have I write it down instead of verbally speaking.

I think this topic is interesting for a couple of reasons.

Test: A lot of people have above average intelligence, but can't take a test (any test) and pass for shit. I actually had a professor in college that tested one of his students verbally, because this person would freeze up during the test. At least this professor saw the problem and didn't penalize him for this.

Speaking skills: As above, just because you know a subject like the back of your hand doesn't mean you can express it correctly or intelligently. Again, in college there were several professors that knew their subjects, had written thesis on the subject, etc., but could not "teach" the subject to student for on a learning level.

Good topic Ice. However, I think you're writing skill are more than good. I've never had a problem understanding your posts.

Now your avatar, that's a different thing.

I was joking about myself... Luckily enough, I have had the opportunity to get a better education than the vast majority of people in the world. I was very lucky to have been afforded the opportunity to learn about many subjects, especially English.

Out of mere curiosity, IceNine...with your apparent knowledge of English grammer, does anything irritate you? I mean do you see the difference between, say Internet posts, and an essay you write for college, or publication?

I have always overused the comma. I can't seem to get enough of it. lol
