Sexist Question of the Day--Astrology Why are women more into Astrology than men?
Certainly plenty of men are into it too; even I have read my horoscopes and while I don't really believe in it, I do find it weird that I seem to fit the profile for a Pisces.
But in my experience it is women who know more about astrology. They don't seem to be more religious than men.
Is it some kind of wiccan moon cycle thing that women are more in tune with? Is it those in touch with their female sides who are into it? [Edited 8/16/10 12:14pm] My Legacy

you think men deny astrology because the scientific basis for believing in it is unclear? I would agree, but they do believe in religion. My Legacy

The better question is why is anyone into that stuff?

I don't know, maybe because the horoscopes often say things like "today you'll meet a romantic stranger" or "you will gain a friend but lose a loved one" or "your relationship with your parents will be strained this month but take the high ground and you'll be rewarded". You know, gossipy stuff about human relationships.
The actual predictions, although vague enough to apply to most people, are at the same time specific enough for a man to feel inclined to divide them into true / not true (and since many fall into the "not true" category, they disqualify the prediction as a whole) while women are more likely to make a more general interpretation and look for commonalities and things they can relate to.
Very generally speaking, of course.

I agree horoscopes tend to be generic, but the descriptions about different signs tend to be more specific. I don't know why someone born in March would be different from someone born in May, but honestly these things often seem to be true in my experience.
To some degree they describe basic human characteristics that anyone can relate to (like horoscopes do) but they also describe the signs with some significant differences. [Edited 8/16/10 11:39am] My Legacy

Yeah exactly, and like I said it's when they get specific that a lot of men (me included) go "Hey, wait a minute! I'm not easily distracted or a social butterfly. This horoscope is full of crap" while women might read the same thing and go "Hmm, yes I can be quite a social butterfly on occasion. I mean, I do have many friends. And of course I can be easily distracted when I have lots of things on my mind. It's right on the money!".

But why do men accept that a burning bush spoke to Moses and that a snake offerers fruit to women? Relating to universal human qualities actually makes more sense to me!
I think you are right in your first point in that astrology relates more to emotions and relationships (gossipy stuff as you put it) than any science or religion, and those are key areas of expertise for women. My Legacy

Well, I think there are very few people these days that believe in everything the bible says literally, even among "true Christians". But let's say they do, for argument's sake. Even then it's a bit of an apples and oranges situation, with the difference being that you can't prove or disprove a talking bush hundreds or thousands of years ago, whereas it's very easy to compare a direct statement about you and your life with what you actually know. The horoscope said you should be lucky when gambling this month. Sorry, it turned out not to be true. You lost $100. Or the star sign says that you have a fiery temper. Well maybe you know for a fact that it takes a world war to rile you up.

true, I suppose both could be seen as simply how you interpret them. The bible's stories might be allegorical or metaphorical, and horoscopes might be vague enough to apply to anyone's life
The key is they both get you to thinking about important subjects and offer some sort of lesson or sign of what to pay attention to and when, and that focus could help you to see your life in a different light. My Legacy

I follow the rule that it's bad luck to read an old astrology prediction to see (in hindsight whether it happened or not) and since I never have a current newspaper or magazine on hand, I never read them

I let myself get totally influenced and carried away by it one time.
Back in 1994, it said "on or around December 8, you will meet your future spouse or lifelong friend"
So that morning, the guy I had in my bed told me "my future wife will be able to play the guitar and drive a manual", I couldn't drive a manual, so I kicked him out.
Then later that night, I kept looking at my watch as it ticked over to midnight and I grew increasingly despondent. A drunken guy breathed into my face at the pub, and then I heard someone say to him: "Hey Warren, have you met my wife?" and I felt an arm around my shoulders and looked up…
…into Leo's face, and I "knew" it was HIM.
I married him, thanks to that stupid horoscope

wow that is quite a story!
So what do you think of that? Was the horoscope right, or was it self-fulfilling prophecy?
For me, if it said I would meet anyone in 1994 I'd say "I'll have to get off this couch first, and that is highly unlikely!" My Legacy

I think if I'd never read it, I wouldn't have looked for it, and then read so much meaning into the whole thing. A few weeks later I heard from his best friend that he thought I was "the one", which only added fuel to my fire

yes, all of our actions lead us to where we are right now, but do you think the horoscope knew the future?

what I think is, if you don't read it, you don't go down that path, If you DO read it, you open yourself up to suggestion. This particular horoscope was VERY specific though, I've not really seen anything like it since. I do find it hard to believe that all aquarians met their SO that day.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
yeah, it would seem logical that it is only the ones who read it who met their SO that day, but I bet all of those ones did meet them!
I wonder if people think astrology is set in stone? Seems most people would view it like you, as a suggestion "focus on this aspect of your life right now" My Legacy

yeah, if you see that part as important or lacking and your horoscope points it out to you, it's probably only a good thing, whether you believe it or not.
