Publishing an ebook

I have a question for you guys. I recently designed a book for a client. He now wants me to put it up as an ebook on Amazon Kindle. I cannot seem to get anything to work (properly).

The book is a poetry book with stanzas and line breaks, but when I try to convert it to an ebook, it loses its format. I've tried exporting the inDesign file to the ePub extension and viewing the results. It is close, but not quite right.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

can you create a pdf file that's laid out correctly? and then from there convert to epub?

I tried that, but it messed with the formatting also.

Since Amazon takes pdf files, I thought I could simply upload it and the ebook work properly. However, that didn't work. No images translated and the text was all thrown off.

have you tried copy and pasting the book into another program and then exporting to pdf or ebook?

By using indesign to create the book, it's not that easy.

I have been rebuilding the book in MSWord. That seems like the only solution I can come up with to make it work half-way right. My biggest issue so far are the images and headings the guy used throughout the book. If it was just text, it wouldn't be so bad.

I can't think of another option and converting it to pdf that way.

isn't there an indesign forum or website or something, or publishers forum that would tell you how to do this?

Yes, I've found a few. Some have been somewhat helpful, but most haven't.

Can't you just use Word and convert it to a PDF? that is what I do when publishing my eBooks.

Love that you get a credit, very cool! I know someone famous LOL

word is extremely limited in terms of layout, if you have already designed a hardcopy book it should be a simple process of conversion to get it to PDF (which it is from InDesign) it seems the difficulty is translating it from PDF to ebook.

When you say to eBook what do you mean, what program is it? InDesign?

I love the clean look of your design.

I tried a few things last night. It has been an adventure so far.

I've figured out that the ebook is very similar to building a website (something I need to improve upon).

it's a book that can be used on those kindle things I'm guessing
