While I was watching the Super Bowl pre-game and halftime shows I noticed that while some of the artists were lip-synching (Michelle Branch, Shania Twain) others didn't (Sting, No Doubt, Beyonce Knowles) now...I know that Shania can sing...why did she bother lip-synching? Was she afraid that during a long chorus that her boobs would pop out of that outfit?

I always thought that the whole thing was lip synched. I remember when Whitney did that amazing rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, it was lip synched. Not that she couldn't sing it--she had gone into studio to record it in advance--but I remember them saying that they did that for everyone to make sure nothing went awry.

Of course that could have been just for Whitney cuz she was on crack (although it was pre-Bobby wasn't it?).

Santana was all live, you could tell. They rocked but when the Branch girl came on an they all lipsynced and instrumentsynced, I was like WHAT?


My theory is that the record company suits see this as obvious attempt to sell more records.

Okay, nothing wrong with that but they must have told Santana and Michelle, "Uh, looky here now, uh, I think you have to make the performance sound just like the radio show see, we have to sell them records. And well, people, they might not recognize the song if it's payed live, you know, and well, that means no spikes in sales. So, Carlos, you can play all your old songs live."

Dixie Chicks national anthem looked a lip-sync too. Albeit to a pre-recorded alternate "live" version, like Shania's. Shania was/is lame, Prince duetting with her must of been by his Vanity/Apollonia standards.

With Sting, Bon Jovi and No Doubt it seemed a live vocal over pre-recorded instrumentals.

What did Beyonce do? In clip I saw she just seemed a dancer for Santana.

Bon Jovi before presentations was a terrible idea and very out of place. Even if it had a instrumental break to run nostalgic road to superbowl clips over.

Ugh, this just makes me more happy that I watched the SNL half-time skit instead!

I thought the No Doubt/Sting performance was very good. It certainly showed up Shania and her lip-synching.

I wish there was no singing act at the super bowl, big or small. No one is EVER happy with who is named. Just go back to the old marching band with a cool routine, cute girls with batons, tubas, drums, clarinets, cymbols, you know, the band geeks. They rule!
