Need instruction on how to podcast/internet broadcast sporting events

My son is going to be the sports reporter for the local high school newspaper, and wants to eventually pursue a career in sports broadcasting. I came up with the idea of broadcasting his high school's football games - they presently have no radio broadcast of any kind.

I know there may be hurdles to overcome - rights, licenses, fees, what the school board will let you do, etc. But first of all, I need to know HOW you do this internet broadcast thing.

I know nothing at all about podcasts, but I assume they aren't live. Is a podcast a thing where you record something, then upload it to some server so others can hear it at their leisure? Or can you broadcast a podcast live?

Are there other ways to broadcast live over the Internets? Cost is definitely a factor for us, so any solutions have to be as close to free as possible.

Our goal with this is first and foremost to get a set of broadcast examples that my son can use to show his talents to colleges at which he's applying. I highly doubt very many people will actually tune in to the broadcasts, but who know?

You can broadcast live on there, as I do every week, and it goes to podcast automatically later. You load your switchboard, and call in (your phone is your microphone). It's pretty easy to figure out.

It's free. There is a great help area on there too with short videos to walk you through stuff.

Also try www.podbean.com
