Can the Heat beat the Bulls 72 - 10 record

Is Jeff Van Gundy on crack?

The Miami Herald reports: Jeff Van Gundy thinks that the LeBron James-Dwyane Wade-Chris Bosh trio will lead the Heat to break the Bulls' 72-win mark in 1995-96.

Really? I'll bet they have 10 losses by the All-star game.

The NBA is just as watered-down today as it was in the mid-90s - who knows?

Yeah, that's one of the ways it could go.

I think the Heat fall apart when James realizes he's second-fiddle to Wade, and then when Wade refuses to let James be The Man.

Chris Bosh will be torn up in the middle of all this.

That's the way I can see it playing out.

LeBron already knows that going in. Judging by his actions, he never wanted that Jordan/Magic/Bird role, otherwise he would have stayed in Cleveland or gone to Chicago/NY. He'd rather be a facillitator.

A one word answer to your original question: NO

I think this record will stand until the NBA exists no more. In my mind, it's an astounding accomplishment.

That is my stance. I doubt it will ever get broken. The Bulls gave away 3 losses the last 2 weeks of that season.

The train of thought by the First Take panel is that Jeff Van Gundy is amping up the

pressure on Miami to take the pressure off of Orlando who is in the same division

coached by his brother Stan.

For the record, no i don't think they will win 72 games nor do i think they care.

The bottom line is to win the title. 64 is definitely not out of the questions. I think most

championship caliber teams don't even think about it once they reach that 60 win plateau.

Won-Lost records are irrelevant now. It doesn't mean a thing if you don't win the title.

The Patriots are the best example of that. lol

I don't know. I don't think facilitators take out an hour on ESPN to broadcast where they're going.

And it's hard to imagine a guy that's won two MVPs in a row believing he's anything but The Man.

We'll see, though.

Naw, the 90s East was as watered down as it gets, so no, it ain't happenin'. There aren't 4 expansion teams in the 00s.

If they gel as a team and don't suffer too many serious injuries, IF! I think they'll get between 65 and 70. It will still be really difficult for them to win that many if they have a big lead in the standings (which is likely to happen pretty early in the season). First, they'll rest, playing less minutes and possibly sitting out a player or two for whole games. Second, very few players have EVER had the single-minded intensity and focus of Michael Jordan. MJ was a very large part of the Bulls winning those 72 games.

Right! lol But all this talk about the Heat is just too much for me right now. Need to remind people what REAL greatness is/was. This Heat team hasn't even played a game yet. They could end up having a ton of personality issues and play terribly together. I know Cleveland won 65 and I respect Van Gundy's opinion. Dude doesn't usually go in for the hyperbole. But they haven't played a GAME yet. I need to wait and see before I can back anybody approaching that record. Ask the Lakers how hard it is to reach that number. It's near impossible.

Chemistry is key for ALL teams, so this will be no different.
