When it comes to rich folks, New York's got them by the barrel full.

According to the Metro Wealth Index, the Big Apple boasts more millionaires than any other city in America.

New York stomps the competition with 667,200 millionaires. That's more than the total of the next three runners up -- Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington D.C. --combined.

New York Has the Most Millionaires

New York’s millionaire population has now surpassed the boom times of 2007.

According to the new Metro Wealth Index, created by consulting firm Capgemini, the New York Metropolitan area had 650,000 high-net worth individuals, or people with $1 million or more in investible assets in 2009. That is 18.7% higher than in 2008.

Once again, the New York area topped the list of metro-area wealth centers. Its total was greater than the combined total of the next three runners up–Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington.

Of the top 10, Houston posted the fastest growth, at 28.9%. But all enjoyed strong growth.

Here are the tallies of millionaires for the top 10, along with the percentage growth:

Houston –- 88,200, +28.9%

San Jose — 86,500, +24.5%

But isn't their population more than those 3 combined? I don't know for sure, but I'd guess it's pretty close.

True I think per square inch (or per % of overall population), Austin Texas had the most millionares as listed by some biz magazine a few years ago.

i dont even see how detroit is on the list

everybody here is either broke or scared or just destitute

nobody here helps the city children or they're parents wouldnt be in the unemployment line

A lot of the wealthy in NYC are part of charity organizations that participate in fund raising and other events for underpriviledged kids. Makes you wonder if some do it to gain points on the status chain among the wealthy or to make the society pages, moreso than for humanitarian reasons. (j/k or not sure if I really am).

I'm not surprised at all considering the cost of living there. It makes sense that salaries would also be higher. Plus there's a higher number of Finance related companies/jobs there, probably more than anywhere in the world.

It is indeed. A quick online search shows 8.3 million vs. 3.8, 2.8 and 0.6 million respectively.

Yes, it is very expensive. A place of movers and shakers. It's all about the money here. As far as higher salaries, that depends on what career choices you make and what company you work for that offers high salaries.

I bet NY has the most homeless and brokeass people too....

Just watch the "housewives of New York City"...they are always going to some charity event...but it's not really about the cause, it's really to "keep up appearances" with the "important people".

There isn't a day on my way to work in Manhattan, that I don't pass homeless people. I find that many people in NYC, tend to live outside their means as well.
