I did want to check this out this weekend. Did you see "Greenberg"? That was also very "real". And one of my friends had a line or two in it (I didn't even know until I saw him). My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Thanks for the good word. I definitely want to catch this one in a theater. I really liked Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo in Blindness.

I had some trepidation going into this movie, because I was a little leery of the "lesbian falls for a guy" plot, but I really, really enjoyed it. I loved it.
And Mark Ruffalo, Annette Bening, and Julianne Moore are all superhot. Just sexy and real-looking. I thought that was amazing.

Wendy Melvoin's girlfriend, Lisa Cholodenko, directed the movie too.
A friend of mine works for a big PR company, and just sent me a box full of promo items for movies, including Salt, Just Wright, Burlesque, The Karate Kid, Our First Wedding, and more. Amusingly enough, the promo item from The Kids Are Alright was a reuseable grocery bag. haha It says "I'm Totally Into Local" on one side, and the movie title on the other. Totally used it the other day.
The previews look awesome, so it's definitely on my list to see this movie.

Wait... are you serious? Is that why they go into talking about Joni Mitchell in a key scene? Lisa? I need to check this out. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Wait I'm so confused... I thought that Wendy and Lisa were still a couple... this is a whole different Lisa. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Yes. It's a different Lisa. Lisa Cholodenko (wife), Lisa Coleman (old gf current business partner.) It's a fantastic movie by the way. Annette Benning was amazing to watch. And yes, the Joni Mitchell scence is sweet. Oh and at the end of the credits there's a simple little message: "For Wendy and Calder." Calder is Wendy and Lisa's little boy... "...literal people are scary, man literal people scare me out there trying to rid the world of its poetry while getting it wrong fundamentally down at the church of "look, it says right here, see!" - ani difranco

Okay I saw "The Kids are Alright", "Greenberg" and "Funny People" all in the same week. And it's veryinteresting to compare all of them.
The only criticism I have of "The Kids" is that the score is so cliche... I can't tell you how many low budget indie and student films trying to poingnant with human drama use an acoustic guitar track vaguely strumming though bluesy, questioning, BORING musical phrases.
Outside of that, this movie was incredibly entertaining and so very relevant to things I am close to in my life (actually all three have such elements). I know a couple with a donor, and about 12-13 years from now the kids have the right to know who the father is. And there also is my friend who is starting her own landscaping business of "green" responsible landscaping and gardens who is also going through similar drama with a marriage, external romance, all hinged on self worth, etc. She's even blown up at her poor Latino gardener who is witness to a lot. Hope she doesn't read this!

Greenberg is a very sophisticated film in terms of how it's shot, edited, and written. The changes in the main character are so subtle, but he does evolve. This movie has a very precise way in which it is colored right down to the film grain. And the characters act in very unique but natural way.

Funny People has that scene that is such a contrast to the one in Greenberg where a person contacts an old flame and they have a sitdown emotional reconnection.
Watch the one in Funny People... it has an edge. It's like the idea of Funny People is to do the normal explicit improv banter of a Sandler/Apatow movie but simetimes let it drift into a very dramatic cruel or sad context. [Edited 8/2/10 20:20pm] My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman have not been partners in love and relationship for a while now. Probably going on a decade.
Wendy is romantically partnered with Lisa Cholodenko, and they have a child together (and a British bulldog that farts a LOT). I'm not sure how they conceived or got their child. I would think Lisa Cholodenko would have carried, but I'm not sure at all.
Lisa Coleman is married to Renata Kanclerz. They both use the last name "Kanclerz Coleman". They have a little girl together. I think Lisa Coleman carried the child.
Wendy & Lisa as we know them still work together, of course. Renata is on the Org at times, and she's a fab gal! She's a smart cookie, too. Her and Lisa's house was once featured in some magazine, namely the kitchen. Pics have been posted on the Org about it, a few times. Renata is also the manager of W&L, and I believe she's managing The Family/Fdeluxe.
All of them are wonderful people, and everything is very friendly and honest, it seems. It's refreshing to NOT see women cat fighting like we've seen in the past.

I just saw this...absolutely LOVED it. Acting was tops. Cool to hear Wendy's partner directed it. When Annette's and Mark's characters were singing Blue, I almost started singing along.
