21 killed in mass panic at Germany's Love Parade, 511 injured

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2010/07/24/international/i092047D05.DTL

German police say that 10 people were killed and 15 others injured when mass panic broke out in a tunnel at the Love Parade.

Police said the deaths occurred Saturday in the city of Duisburg, where thousands had gathered for the annual techno music festival.

Police gave no other immediate details. But the Germany news agency DAPD reports the stampede broke out after authorities tried to stop thousands of people from entering the area where the parade is being held.

DAPD says the victims were crushed and that emergency workers had trouble getting through to them.

So sad pray. I often wonder at huge events if they are really safe...

Oh thanks, I was wondering if it was caused by some incident such as a fight or something.

I just read that they had closed the area because there were already too many people inside and the last big event was about to start and people were pushing towards the entrance. So in that tunnel peopel were kinda trapped and couldn't move forward or backward and started to scream and that caused the panic. Don't know if it is true.

Oh lord, it sounds like people got excited and carried away...that's always a big concern with crowds.

IMO the entrances and exits are always way too small.

And the event that is still going on is even still broadcasted live here as if nothing has happened.

Hi there, i live in Cologne Germany. Today, one day after the tragedy, there are news reports non-stop on every channel.

Just recently, when we went to see Prince at Werchter and when the storm came, lights and thunder near the festival terrain and so on, it scared the shit out of me. Not so much being hit or anything, just the fact that there are 60.000 people and what might happen if there`s a panic. We were soaked, but very lucky. It was a wonderful evening.

It´s probably not a good idea to put my thoughts this way, but let me just say that when it comes to an event that´s obviously totally overcrowded, why do people put themselves in a situation like that, why don´t you just wait somewhere til there`s less people, when it`s obvious that there`s not enough space for everyone? Don`t we have a responsibilty for ourselves to a certain point? Why did people still try to get on the festival area, when there were so many people already trying to leave? For a rave? Dancing? Have a good time? My thoughts are controversial, and i don`t want to fight here, i am just saying it`s hard to understand why you would still try to get to the party when there`s too many people. That being said : the more reports there are, it`s getting more and more obvious that the organisers did know very well that there would be problems, that the festival area did not provide space for more than 500.000 people and they expected more than a million people. It´s absolutely stupid to try to get that many people through a tunnel to the festival grounds, they knew that at certain points there would be large crowds arriving at the same time, they knew that there weren`t enough emergency exits, all of that was common knowledge before the event.

Just outside the tunnel, where the road sloped down, there are stairs people climbed, got stuck on. Some fell off, causing the panic.

The pics from all the newspapers today are horrifying! You can feel how panicked and terrified everyone was just from the images. It's terribly sad.
