Never read this graphic novel. Anyone familiar with it?

Yes. It was written by Warren Ellis, one of the few people on this Earth who I admire to near hero status. He's written an insane amount of comic books, most of which would be considered material for "mature audiences". The book he's probably best know for was his creator owned Transmetropolitan. But he's written (and is writing) for all types of publishers. He is also currently at the helm of Astonishing X-Men.

I have Red (a self-contained three issue mini-series), and it's quite good. I'd put it in the middle of the pack as far as Ellis' vast bibliography is concerned. The trailer looks interesting, but it definitely has a different tone than the book (i.e., lighter, less violent). Most people who have seen it say that's pretty much spot on, but they've enjoyed it all the same. I'll spare you a plot rundown as I it's already been written right here. Red Wiki Page
