What???? What you got against lavender? It likes dry soil and it doesn't like too much water. It is also great paired with Brie. drooling

Surprising fact about your cats, the skunks here run with stray cats in our area and people are discouraged from feeding the stray cats since they feed the skunks too.

Time to get an owl... or a hawk, they'll take care of any skunks. If not put ratkill in a juicy strawberry.

:fuckpeta:

Ah nah. redface I mean, thanks! But it's really not that much. Once you've got it all rolling it's only about 30-45 minutes of work each day. And it's something I've done off and on for most of my life. Also, I actually find it really relaxing. Which is a good thing for me, because I'm generally not a very relaxed kind of person. Plus, it's a bit of a work out. So I get all kinds of goodness out of it while putting what I think is very little effort into it. And you'd probably be surprised at how little space all that takes up. Only the vine growing squash, melon and corn take up any kind of sizeable area. Everything else, which is mostly in buckets, just keeps to itself and does it's own thing.

My cats are 100% indoors and will always stay that way. But I totally understand the issues with freely feeding cats outdoors - stray or domesticated. We don't appear to have any issues with that close by. What we DO have is a major problem with neighbors feeding the squirrels. One person was even leaving out dishes of peanuts for them last year. Peanuts that they were burying in my buckets and pots. confused When I did the re-planting and transplanting this year I found them everywhere. I think somebody talked to the guy who was giving them peanuts (an older gentlemen). But it's too late, because they've already become too people friendly. They'll sit on the ground, like, two feet away on their hind legs and chitter at you.

Love birds. It's another passion actually. We've got a skreech owl who flys over some nights on his rounds. But beyond him eating the skunk, I'd rather just pull up the strawberries. I like that there's raccoon, oppossum and skunk just wandering through the neighborhood. Makes me feel like the balance of things must be OK around here.

I do have lavender! Out front is Jasmine in the ground, Lavender and this crazy night blooming vine called Moonglow in pots. BIG ASS white flowers - six inches across. There's also another bird bath and feeder out front. All of the feeders, of course, are squirrel proof. lol

cool Jeff Buckley is definitely a friend tester for me, as well. I'm a fan of everything the guy ever recorded. It's not all great, but it's all we've got.

I believe wholeheartedly that the NBA is actually stronger than it's ever been right now as far as talent goes. I can't remember a time when there were so many highly skilled players spread out amongst so many teams. Yes, there are still eternal bottom dwellers, my Warriors are one of them. And it's still, seemingly, the same few teams at or near the top. But the middle ground is much more solid than it has been at any time in my basketball watching life (which started the year Jordan entered the league). I also believe there is more talent from team to team than there used to be as well. A lot of people don't seem to remember that in the past most teams only had one or two good players and may not have any great ones. These days most teams have a bench player or two that could be a starter if they were needed.

Are there things wrong with the league? Yes. The players are spoiled, overpayed brats. They complain WAY too much about fouls. And a few of them don't play as hard as they should all the time. But hey, it's a long season. And if they can't see the difference in the results of the teams who play hard all the time and the teams who don't then they deserve to be on losing teams (and most of them are). I will say, though, that if there is a lockout next season I'll have some serious problems coming back to the league. The only reason any teams are losing money right now is because of the way the collective bargaining agreement currently structures contracts (particularly max contracts). The players and the players union are going to have to acquiesce to the owners and the leagues needs to restructure that portion of the CBA. If they can through that without a work stoppage, cool. If they can't, I'm going to be most put out. lol

How can I get the Legue Pass package after all this time? I freakin' LOVE basketball. I will happilly watch the worst two teams in the league play any time. During the season I watch pieces of every game each night as they move across from the East to West Coast. If the Warriors or Lakers are playing I may end up watching those complete games. But sometimes I record them and watch them after all the other good games have ended. lol I just love basketball, man. I love knowing what players are on each team and what kind of season they're having. And if I miss something special it bums me out.

Somewhat in my own defense, though, basketball is my only sport. I follow football a little (die-hard 49ers fan). But I'm not passionate about it like I am basketball. Other than that I pretty much ignore sports. ...oh.. I like golf, too. lol

Hey my friend

Sorry about the threadjacking. I'm really paying for it this morning as I never drink.

Anyway, if you're a fan of the Warriors and own the NBA package, kudos to you. I remember when the Warriors were actually a competitive team about 5 years ago or so, (or was it 6 or 7 now) and it just seemed like their team and the fans in their stadium were electric.

Now? Not so much which is really unfortunate.

To your point about players, I don't disagree at all talent wise. But at the end of the day, to me it feels like that is where the line is drawn. Great players on not so great of teams. Granted I'm not objective about this because I'm a Celtic fan, but I HATED watching the Lakers win the championship this year. They had about as much chemistry as a bull in a china shop. But those Lakers and Celtics teams of the 80s were unbelievably fun to watch.

To be fair, the nature of free agency has made all sports less appealing to me as folks are jumping ship all over the place.

Any way, I really love it when a fan of a subpar team watches all of their games as a die hard. Very cool my friend....

Oh yeah, and the timing of Jeff Buckley's death the f*ing day before he was going into the studio has got to be my personal greatest loss in music. There were a fwe absolutely gorgeous songs on Sketches For My Sweetheart but he was so right to want to rerecord some material to add to it.

OK, the garden, in short... or as short as I can do...

The Herb Garden - All potted, some of them together - like the wooden herb barrel. When they get huge and need to be pruned I hang dry them in a closet and store the dried herbs in unused mason jars.

Sage - traditional, one of my favorite things on Earth

English Thyme

Lemon Thyme - A new discovery this year, LOVE the stuff

Thai Basil

Boxwood Basil

Italian Basil - large leaf

Oregano

Texas Tarragon

Rosemary

Chives

Lemon Balm - for tea

Chocolate Mint - for tea and cooking

Mint - regular, for tea and cooking

Catnip - for the cats lol

I also have two very healthy potted Chamomile plants that I use for tea. The dried flowers smell like fresh honey. drool

Failures: Only the Garlic Chives failed this year, which kind of bummed me out as I love the plant and the flowers.

Can't recommend enough that anyone who has ever wanted to try growing fresh herbs do so immediately. They take up very little space, a lot of them don't mind growing close together and they're really quite hardy. Some of them will live outside year round, depending on your local climate. Just put 'em in the sun and water them everyday, blam! Fresh herbs!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The veggie garden - Largely a "bucket" garden, but probably 1/3 of it is in the ground this year. If I had a better yard, with better soil, more of it would be there. But the soil where I am now is pretty bad, even after I've added a truckload of fresh soil, manure and coarse sand.

Tomatoes - two Beefsteak, three Cherry Tree, two Yellow Pear, three Purple Cherokee drool and two of these weird Italian Cherry Romas. They look like a Roma, but they're only about 1/3 the size of the kind you see at a grocery store. This years is the first time I've grown them and they're great. All of the others are favorites from years of trial and error. I hope to do more Heirlooms in the future, but the Purple Cherokees are the only variety I've had really good consistent yields with so far.

Ichiban Eggplant

Italian Eggplant

Black Beauty Zucchini

Yellow Zucchini

Yellow Crookneck Squash

Cucumbers

Yellow Sweet Corn

Swiss Chard drool

Rainbow Chard drool I'm a chard fan

At least three varieties of carrots - might be four. Which is odd, because they're one of my least favorite veggies. lol But I use them IN a lot of stuff.

Jumbo Radishes

Cantaloupe - maybe, we'll see

Pumpkins - lookin' really good for a large, healthy yield this year. They failed last year after the vines grew all over the garden.

My favorite thing this year and the biggest surprise by far is four buckets of pepper plants. Green Bell, Serrano, Pablano and Jelapeno. Last year I grew two of each of them, as well as Tabasco peppers, in smaller pots. They all grew to full size and they all produced, but none of them were particularly special. In fact, they needed quite a bit of attention to keep them healthy, growing and producing. But since they were alive at the end of the season I just left them in their pots. As late fall approached I even stopped watering them. For whatever reason those four varieties (eight plants) all made in through the rest of Fall and all of Winter without me giving them a second thought. Several of them were even living on their sides after they were blown over in a storm. The Tabasco peppers died, but since the rest of them had been strong enough to make it through the Winter by themselves I decided to reward them by transplanting them (two each) to the five gallon buckets. Gave them a little organic fertilizer, started watering them everyday and they were flowering again in less than two weaks. All eight of the plants have been producing such a high yield that I'm giving away baskets of peppers. cool

Failures: Brocolli and artichoke. Brocolli failed last year, too. It grows to a full size, just starts to make flourets, and dies. lol

Thwarted by animals: Blueberry Bush and ALL MY STRAWBERRIES! The birds got the blueberries, but I thought they might and I didn't try to stop them. I've got two feeders and a birdbath in the garden, so I can't really blame them for eating some tasty blueberries.

The strawberries, on the other hand, were being eaten by a BIG. ASS. SKUNK! lol Last year I grew two varieties and they produced, but the yield was a bit small. So this year, since they're one of the the things that actually grows in the ground and I had the space, I planted twice as many of each variety. They all grew rapidly, flowered, and started producing fruit. Then I'd go out in the morning to water and the fruit would be gone! Always JUST as it was turning red and looking tasty. I thought it was the birds again, but that didn't make sense because last year they showed no interest in them.

So one night about one A.M. I hear both of my cats sitting at the open sliding back door GROWLING like mad beasts at something on the other side of the screen. lol They never growl! Like, this was the first time I'd experienced that behavior from them. I walked over to the door and looked, but I didn't hear or see anything, so I just chased them away. A couple nights later I figured it out when the RANK ASS smell of skunk wafted through a SECOND STORY window that overlooks the garden. I mean it was BAD! Made my eyes water. I went downstairs to try and see him again, but no luck! I smelled him and caught the cats growling at him several more times before I finally saw that strawberry steaking fucker. Like I said, BIG. ASS. SKUNK. I have a table with an umbrella out there as well, and since I have no desire to ever meet his stank ass face to face... or whatever lol ... I just pulled all the strawberries right out.

Neighbors have since commented on his smell, too. Nasty smellin' beasty. I've walked right by skunks in the wild and they usually have very little odor, if any at all. If you don't mess with them they stay that way. Not this guy. This nasty ass is walkin' around proud about his foulness. Anyway, you learn something new everyday. Up to that point I didn't know that skunks love strawberries. Turns out they do! lol

Thanks for the garden love! cool It's really not that much cost or work, though. There's the initial investment of various size pots and 5 gallon buckets, tools, soil, fertilizer, seeds or started plants (Home Depot, Lowes and Wal-Mart have all that stuff for surprisingly low prices). Then if you're going to plant anything in the ground you've got to prepare the area. But other than that, if you've got good light, maintaining a garden really isn't much work. Nature does most of it for you if you, short of regular watering. Plus, all the hardware - pots, tools, cages, etc. - can be reused for years.

Even if you don't have a lot of space you can do bucket gardening. Give it a look up teh internets. Tomatoes, chard, eggplant and strawberries have all done incredibly well for me in buckets.

I am a die-hard, hard core Warriors fan. I even had season tickets for a couple years (I lived a stones throw away from the Arena at the time). I've followed them on a near religious level since 1992 (Run-TMC). But their continued suckage is actually starting to get a bit depressing. The Arena is still packed almost every night with maniacal screaming fans, but as an organization they never go anywhere. It's a constant rebuilding cycle, which we're starting AGAIN this season. It's sad to watch so many other games sometimes because the league is littered with former Warriors players. lol

Free agency in basketball hasn't really affected me much. I watch so much ball that I've got a pretty good handle on where players have moved to and from. Plus, I think if owners and general managers use free agency correctly they can rapidly improve their team. It wasn't like that before, when players stayed on the same team for most or all of their careers. This offseason has been a perfect example of that. Also, an interesting side affect of teams grabbing multiple top-tier players is that they will more than likely sellout every away game, which helps the entire league.

I'm a Lakers fan because I lived in SoCal for a while and they were also my Grandfathers team (boy did he HATE the Celtics lol ). I'm a Trailblazers fan because I was born in Portland. My Mom attended one of the finals games the year they won. I'm a Chicago fan because Jordan is who got me interested in basketball on my own. But honestly, I'll watch anybody play. lol I totally agree with you about the chemistry of the Lakers last year - it was AWFUL! It even looked uncomfortable on tv. It wasn't that bad the year before and I expect it to be better next year with Blake and Barnes on their team.

--------------------------------

It still makes me sad thinking about Jeff being gone. I was a passionate fan from the minute I first heard Last Goodbye on Mtv in the middle of the night (literally, it was like three in the morning). But I didn't, and still don't in the real world, have any friends who felt the same way about his music as I did. There was one girlfriend who liked him, but other than that most of the discussions I've had about Jeff have been online. Kinda weird that. Agree completely with you regarding Sketches. nod

Oh, and strangely, I really don't care that people might think I'm a woman. It's happened before. lol

I thought you were a woman too....a bitch no less.

knowing your a guy changes my feelings about you....somehow.

biggrin

Sorry. lol It was nothing personal. I'm usually a pretty nice fellow. We just had our first interaction around one of the subjects I feel most strongly about in all the world. Glad you're giving me a second chance. biggrin That's something I believe strongly in as well. First impressions are pretty much pointless as people are much more likely to disappoint you six months down the road. lol
