I applaud the fashion industry for trying to go against the norms and standards of the euro-centric (and increasingly asian-centric) presentations of beauty. Shit, I wish Prince would show more dark skinned black women in his videos. Considering how the black American population kick started his career for him. So, I think the more black models with truly black features (hair, face, body, etc.), the better. Black women need to see more of that (I can't tell you how many times I wished American had presented images of Asian men that weren't so....unfortunate. ).

However, Alex Wek ain't it. She's freakishly skinny, and still has an absolutely unobtainable gazelle like figure for most women. I think she gets a 'pass' because she is dark skinned and her facial features aren't 'westernized', but just look at this mess: http://districtramblings....ghghs1.jpg

Now, to be fair... It is the fashion industry, and it's not like we're ever going to see a less-than-perfect looking person with a full time modeling job. And more black African models need to be incorporated into the mix, but Alex Wek still represents an unrealistic, unobtainable standard for almost all women.

If the same picture I posted above had been, say, an old picture of Cindi Crawford, there would be multiple posts lambasting the unrealistic and unobtainable body standard. Models will almost be tall and skinny. But old girl looks like a giraffe in that picture.

Although this is an anerixic picture of Beverly Peele:

She's got pictures where she's filled out a bit and more....'realistic' for other women. The main issue, being that her face isn't as iconic as Alex's.

She's still hawt.

Sade makes my guts go mmph. And I always thought Aaliyah was fine, too. Both a bit thin, though.
