Speaking it too, not just listening to it? lol Honestly, I feel uncomfortable speaking English with Thais who only speak it a little. I tend to try to switch the conversation to Thai. I can't slow down my speech or grade my language well at all. boxed In Thai I'm a comfortable underdog.

I speak English at half my pace and a bit more pronounced and articulate than I would normally.

I also chose words I feel are going to be easily understood, and I even follow each statement up

with something that reinforces the context.

It can be exhausting, but it seems to work. lol

As far as speaking in Thai, I can only throw random phrases around. I'm still very new at it, not having been here a year yet.

I think I'm 80% there in cracking the alphabet code though, so I think that's going to speed me up.

I was able to read 'Ba Mi ped Yang" on a Thai-only menu and thought I was going to cry tears of joy. lol

See, I just felt so weird doing that, and could never keep it up. My speaking as I always do with native English speakers works for Mon, who's so comfortable using English. I think it's helped her a lot. It doesn't work in formal teaching settings though. lol

With speaking Thai I can hold full conversations, though there are sometimes words I don't catch or don't know, but in general the context and the parts I do understand mean that I'm in the loop. Mae talks to me as if I'm completely fluent though, and she's not the easiest Thai to understand, so sometimes I'm left nodding and smiling a lot and it's quite a struggle. I like it though. She talks to me every day like that (usually complaining about one or more of her children, about money, or her health lol ), sometimes for several minutes, and it has to be a good thing. I'd say I probably understand maybe 70% of what I hear from people around me, on TV etc. but I can't say everything I want to in response yet.

That's so cool about reading the menu. I wish I could do that, and I'm sure if I could I'd feel the same way when I deciphered something. lol

My issue is that I'm not surround by 100% Thais.

Friends, coworkers, students, ...EVERYBODY... here is a mix of Thai, Chinese, Korean, etc... and English is the accepted language to allows all to communicate with each other.

On a daily basis I see two Asians who only look marginally different from each other (especially Japanese and Chinese) conversing in broken English, because they can't handle Thai.

Thais are by far the worst at English on average, and they're also the laziest (if the only lazy Asians I know lol ), but English is more commonly used.

I'm speaking Thai as much as I can, but I don't hit the tones correctly all the time, having problems with the high tones ending up sound like emphatic falling tones, etc. And I don't care what anybody says, the tones are NOT ornamental. They're quite necessary. lol

But yeah, I'm told once I crack the reading code, the spead of my picking up Thai should increase.

Totally. lol

Tones aren't ornamental but there is no way at this point I'm going back to learn specific tones for specific words individually. shake I must be picking many of them up just by hearing Thai a lot. At least, I hope I am. lol My brother in law occasionally corrects me but nobody else seems to (which tells me nothing about whether I'm speaking correctly or not, of course). I still think the main thing is knowing more and more and more vocab though, since once you have that in your armoury you can have conversations, and the more conversations you have the more you listen to Thai words and can ape the way Thais speak, including the tones. mr.green And then if around mostly women, you can speak like a girl, like I do. neutral
