You mentioned that you turned down a job at a daycare center. That tells me that you are pretty good with kids as well as with people. Why not hone in on that skill and build on it.

You're 20 of course you don't know what you want to do with your life. That's what your 20's are for, figuring all that out.

Start small. Downthread you say you're majoring in history. What made you choose that major?

Rather than focusing on what you're not good at or what is out of reach or unrealistic focus on what you're good at, what you enjoy. What are your hobbies? What do you like to do with your free time (when you're not feeling overwhelmed and unmotivated). What are you interested in? What are you passionate about?

Don't be afraid to try different things because you'll fail. Now is the time to do that! Now is the time to make those mistakes and grow from them. It's a great big world and you're just beginning your journey through it!

Depression is often chemical. You don't necessarily have to have a reason for it.

But you're young. Sometimes just the very thought of what lies ahead and having to make life choices can be overwhelming and make you feel unmotivated. hug

step 1...log off and get out into the real world...

I'm so thankful the internets weren't around in my younger days, the time I would have wasted...20 is not an age for making all of your premanent life decisions but rather for experiencing what life has to offer and building a future from those experiences...

be willing to step outside of your comfort zone...learn from your mistakes as well as your successes...don't be afraid to fuck up, it happens...

when it comes down to it, the only person that can really motivate you is YOU...sometimes the best thing you can do is kick yourself in the ass and snap out of your funk and realize that you hold the key to your success and happiness...

at this stage in your life, the ball is in your court...but you have to be willing to play, you can't just sit on the bench and hope for the best...

You could be a counsellor of some sort, a mentor. Like most have said on this board, your 20's is the time to explore who you are. Take what you like to do, and build on it. I work as a school counsellor, which gives me the chance to work with students of all ages. I love talking, learning and helping people. I have the best of all worlds.

trust me, you're not the only one fucking up...everybody does...it's how they handle it, recover from and own their fuck ups that makes the difference...

and it doesn't matter how everyones life around you seems, you have to live your life, not theirs...you could possibly learn from their example but you need to concentrate on you and what affects you directly...

wanting to be perfect everytime is admirable but impossible...you can't spend your entire life being afraid, and the only person thats gonna be able to change that is you...you have to find that motivation...but it all starts by looking and doing...not sitting around and worrying...

First of all, give yourself a chance to fail, there is nothing wrong with fucking up....As long as you learn from it. Those people that seem to have their act together, I'm sure it did not start out that way for them. I am in my 40's and have screwed up many times, but I have learned that as long as I have learned from it, then I am good. Those that have not failed are really missing out on an adventure....

I'm 41 and I'm STILL fucking up! Frequently!! That's how you learn. I'd be afraid if I didn't fuck up every now and then. We don't learn from the things that are easy or that go smoothly. The lessons are in the fuck ups. Fucking up = growth.

Ok, I might be talking to myself about now....sigh

Lesson number 1, don't beat yourself up. There are plenty of people in the world more than happy to do it for you. Be your own best friend, not your own worst enemy!

GET OVER THAT OCD SHIT. It will ruin your life and make you miserable forever. The rich have it all and still they can be miserable too. Do the best you can, forget about what other people think and just do what the hell you do! hug

In the 23 years since I was 20, I've F'd up many times- in relationships, in school (I took my Qualifying exams TWICE!), and in my career. It happens while you're living life. No one is perfect- even the ones who try to make you believe they are.

I think that if you want to be makeup artist, then you should follow that dream. Going to a 4-year school to please someone else- although I understand parental pressure- seems like a waste, esp. if you hate what you're doing. What would you do with your law degree if you don't want to be a lawyer or teacher (2 occupations that involves managing other people's lives)?

I understand how you feel. I've been there. hug

yeahthat

Really great advice there!

As long as I can remember I wanted to design clothes. Only problem is I can't sketch to save my life and I have zero creativity when it comes to that sort of thing. Can sew a lick either. But I can sell like a motherfuck. So I got into marketing and now I work for DKNY. I'm up to my eyeballs in fashion and couldn't love my job more. Hell my career is the one aspect of my life where I am completely happy.
