I just had the pleasure of watching this movie yesterday on one of the many Cinemax channels I have, and I have to say that I can't stop thinking about it. At the time it was released, I was probably just leaving elementary school and going on up to middle school and I faintly remembered the details of the movie and that there was some hype about it in the media because of the survivors having to eat human flesh in order to stay alive after a horrific plane crash in the freezing Andes Mountains. Anywho, while I watching the movie, I looked up the real event on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/w...Flight_571 and I just felt so sad because of all the terrible things the survivors went through. I couldn't imagine being in the middle of snowy mountains in below freezing weather, injured, starving and watching others around me die on top of grieving for those who had succumbed to the plane crash itself. After reading the real story on wiki, I able to decipher some of the "movie magic" events from the actual "real" events that happened. Has anyone else seen this movie? If so, what was your take on it?

Heffa, I was 16. It was a movie my HS boyfriend took me to. It was bananas, as I remember. My bf fell asleep during the movie. I think we saw Crying Game together too. I havent seen it since 1993. I'm an old bitch.

This is a great story. Read the Book it is a amazing. 70 days out there. Hearing occasional reports of the search. Thinking they were saved once! How they got out. How they almost didn't.

It should give you a new out look. Read the book. (and not to respond to some of the replies)

What I remember is (and correct me if I'm wrong) that it was a Christian group of individuals that crashed. Always thought there in lies the irony.

what is the irony? The Bible does not say that god will protect Christians from bad things.

This was a good remake of the story. The original version called, "Survive", was even better. It came out in 1976 and was great!!

i do not think it was better, but it does show both sides of the story. And they are both based on the Boolk, but as 'surivive' is not called 'Alive' I wounder if it was authorised? But it is worth waching if you can find it. (I saw it once on cable about the time Alive came out. (I had read the book in 84)

confuse What would be ironic about this?

I find the irony in eating human flesh in order to avoid meeting their Lord.

i see no irony in that either. not eating when there was food could be seen as suicide. Also show me the verse that says that eating a dead person is a sin. (other than being unclean as that is not an issue for most christens)

It was wild, but the part that angered me the most is the route the pilots were cleared to fly through. I don't think a plane that size had any business flying that route through mountains...taking into consideration the weather and the fog, etc. I just don't get it.

I am not sure what you are talking about. The actual flight plan or that they made a wrong turn. They made a wrong turn and that is when/why they crashed they were off course. But they do not know why or how it happened. But they were not supposed ot be on that side of mountains--which is why the search and rescue did not search that area.

oh one of the 2 men that walked down for help is Roberto Canessa. He is now a major pediatric heart surgeon and once ran for president of Uruguay in 94.

th eother man thatr walked down was Nando Parrado, wrote a book about the events as well. I hacve not read it but I think I will pick it up very soon.

I'm not sure where you are confused about what I was talking about. Yes they made a wrong turn but according to Wiki, the whole flight plan was a bit twisted. They ran into a fog while going into the low passage through the mountains and was estimating the time it would normally take to pass through it...unfortunately, due to the weather and the wind, the plane was travelling at a slower rate and when they made the turn too early then they saw the mountains and tried to correct but by that time it was too late.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Oh okay....but I stand corrected...it wasn't that the plane made a wrong turn, they made the correct turn as followed by their flight plan, however, the turn was made too soon.

wink If you are supposed to turn right on 108st street but take a right on 57th that is still a wrong turn in the correct direction, and as that is a one way street it is little surprise when you run head on into a garbage truck.

Wrong turn, correct turn made too soon, it really doesn't matter, in the end, the plane still crashed. People still died and some survived. It's a fascinating story. biggrin

I remember my mother reading the book when it first came out (in the 70's).

I don't think any of us could actually answer definitively whether or not we could eat human flesh unless we were in the position. I don't think many of us really have a clue of what we might be capable of given the right circumstances.

correct. a person who is truly starving will eat anything remotely edible to stay alive. rats, spiders, you name it....

human flesh would be consumed long before any of that would take place, i reckon...

yeah, I pretty much would starve to death unless McDonald's could find a way to fry all those things up and make them McTasty! Also not drinking piss either.... hmph!
