how about her parents paid tens of thousands to send their kid overseas to make them proud and she shames them like this? SHAMES the family!!! A lifetime of shame comes of this. Not that doing this has done anything but increase the shame she brings on her family.

I hate kids. Anybody who knows me will tell you that I HATE kids. Because of that I made a decision to NOT HAVE ANY! But if I had one I would do everything in my power to love them passionately until the day I died. This person... I don't know... like John, I'm pretty much beyond words. She certainly doesn't deserve to have any contact with that child for the rest of her natural life. Unfortunately this act is so extreme that she'll probably be able to claim some form of insanity. Siiiigh. People suck.

If her parents found out that she is not a virgin ....... then she is not marriage material, in that culture? In China and India etc........ boys are "prized" and girls are a burden.

Newspapers reported the mother was an unmarried medical student returning home after completing a degree abroad.

That's WAY PAST the point when those kind of things would usually be in affect. AND she had been allowed to reach 22 without being married, study medicine, as well as go abroad. So I'm not sure I can get behind those reasons applying to this case. If they do, I would certainly change my extreme stance regarding her punishment. But I'm just not feelin' it on this one.

Not to make any excuses for her but just being around that culture for a short time exposed me to the tremendous pressure for success and the fear of dishonor. I'm aware that the marraiges are arranged at a very early age. Totally agree with you there. But to my understanding, being allowed to go to school to get a degree and ESPECIALLY going overseas would be considered very tolerant. And not being married at 22 is old pretty old in Indian and Arabic cultures. Which wouldn't make you think she had a more strict, traditionalist family. Either way, definitely no excuses. The whole thing is just ugly no matter what her reasoning was/is.

Newborn girls are often killed in India. the male-female ratio of the population in India is somewhere around 10:9.

Despite the shocking manner of attempting to dispose the baby it shouldn't really make too much difference in the end. If about 0.5-1 million kids get killed per year in India by poisoning, drowning or by slitting their throats that should be probably more of a concern than this type of a news story. The difference here is just that she got caught and got reported internationally.

She might have been highly educated, but obviously such traditional views have influenced her choice. That's not to say that most people in India would support infanticide either.
