‘Greedy’ Stallone Slams ‘Rocky,’ ‘Rambo,’ More

Sly Sees YouLet’s face it: 64-year-old Sylvester Stallone has made some pretty terrible movies during his 40 years in show business.

“Tango & Cash.” “Over the Top.” “Rhinestone.” “The Party at Kitty and Stud’s.” They are all films Sly would probably erase from his resume if he could.

But today, the UK’s The Sun newspaper features an interview with the leathery one, in which he makes shockingly candid admissions about bad career choices and movie mistakes. It might surprise you to hear which films he’s criticizing.

Addressing the 1990 film “Rocky V,” widely regarded as the worst of the six “Rocky” films, Stallone told The Sun that the sequel was “a mistake because the audience didn’t want to see the downside of the character. They wanted him to remain on top. I should have known that.”

Why, then, did he make the film? “I’m greedy,” he says. “What can I tell you?” Rocky V

Sly continues the self-loathing by calling his performances in many of the “Rocky” and “Rambo” sequels “self-parody;” a tough pill for dedicated fans of the these franchises to swallow.

However, it was obvious that those fans wanted to see the Italian Stallion parody himself. They wanted the droopy-eyed, mush-mouthed, meathead — and they wanted him in surplus. Whenever he attempted to play against type, says Stallone, fans were turned off. “When I tried to play characters that strayed from who I am, it ended in disaster,” he says. “People didn’t expect me in comedies or musicals.”

Stallone points to the 1992 film “Stop! Or My Mom Will Shot” as a prime example of this theory.

“I made some truly awful movies. ‘Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot’ was the worst,” he says. “If you ever want someone to confess murder, just make him or her sit through that film. They will confess to anything after 15 minutes.”

Granted, at the time, critics agreed whole-heartedly, but the film has gained somewhat of a cult following today, due in no small part to Stallone’s matriarchal side kick, “Golden Girl” Estelle Getty.

It’s awfully refreshing to hear anyone in Hollywood be so honest about their career and films. Now, if only more of them would do it at the same time their movie is released, rather than 20 years later. After all, in 1992, Sly called the Getty-Stallone collaboration “the best of all the comedies I’ve done thus far.”

confused I guess he was greedy when it came to the 6th installment of Rocky as well.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Nah, Rocky 6/Rocky Balboa is actually a great film and you can tell that that movie really meant something to him, he wanted that character to come full circle. I don´t see it as a movie about boxing but as a movie about a man who is trying to cope with his inner pain, his feelings of loss, grieve and loneliness and depression. It´s also about friendship and love and self esteem, the inner values of people, including dogs. lol

I find it tremedously sad and uplifting at the same time and a very enjoyable watch. There are a lot of simple yet very deep messages in it.

Rocky 3 is so so and I could definitely live without part 4 and 5 ( both had horrible soundtracks, too), but I really like Rocky 1, 2 and 6.

Why he made movies like Over The Top, Stop or My Mom Will Shoot, Daylight etc. is totally beyond me.

He´s made some quality dramas like F.I.S.T ( a movie that was loosely based on Jimmy Hoffa´s life. Stallone´s character in it was named Johnny Kovack), or Copland with Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro. Or First Blood ( Rambo II, III and IV had a horrible storyline and were much too jingoistic for my taste but RamboI-First Blood was actually a very good drama about the inner turmoil of a young veteran in the political climate after the Vietnam War. That role was originally offered to Al Pacino.

It´s amazing how he can still make some wonderful movies and create absolutely atrociuos, horrendously stupid movies at the same time. Kind of reminds me of Prince in some ways.

I like both! lol

And both still look younger than they actually are, though they´re probably using different methods to get there. lol

I loved Rocky 3 and 4 and loved the soundtracks. Just didn't care for 5 and 6. I get your theory of how you see the 6th installment of Rocky but I just look at it as a movie Sly made to correct the shitty 5th installment.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Yeah, you´re right...now that I think about it, Rocky3-The Eye of the Tiger was actually pretty good and not just so so...thinking back, I think I have watched that movie at least 60 or 70 times.... lol

Mr.T was pretty good in it, and the fact that the training sequence took place in California gave it an interesting twist. The soundtrack for Rocky 3 was pretty decent ( except for the title track...I´m not into that kind of music but it works for that kind of movie).

Rocky 4 is a movie that has aged badly over the years. I liked it when I was a kid or early teenager but now I find a bit too over the top, no pun intended. And a tad too political for a Rocky movie but then again, there was a little positive message in the end.

But the soundtrack by Vince Di Cola sucked ass. I mean, it didn´t bother me as a kid but in hindsight it just feels weird that Bill Conti wasn´t involved this time.

Bill Conti and Rocky are like peanutbutter and jelly.

Did you know that Bill Conti had originally written the short piece "Reflections" for the Rocky soundtrack because they couln´t use Kool and the Gangs´s "Summer Madness" ?

They used Summer Madness in the first Rocky movie, that scene where he comes home after fighting Spider Rico ....he enters his shabby little apartment, feeds his turtles and says something like :

" I you guys could sing and dance I wouldn´t have to get punched to make a living." or something along those lines, and then he puts a 45 rpm single on his record player.

So, they used Kool and the Gang for the movie, but on the soundtrack it´s "Reflections" by Bill Conti.

I love those Rocky compositions by Bill Conti.

This is Reflections ( they later used it in Rocky II) :

I also love this track here....it´s called "Butkus" and it´s dedicated to Sylvester Stallone´s dog Butkus. He even has his own IMDB page as Butkus Stallone.

Sadly, Butkus passed away after Rocky II and Stallone was supposedly ( and understandably) very depressed after Butkus died. He´s that big bullmastiff in Rocky II.

Butkus:

Sure, he even admitted to that.Rocky 5 was horrible...horrible storyline, horrible soundtrack. And Rocky was really broken and negative but in a different way than in Rocky 6.

Rocky 6 is still a great movie, IMO, even though he probably only made it because Rocky 5 was such a bad movie to bring closure to the Rocky saga.

There are so many memorable scenes in it.

I love this scene:

Yeah - cracking scene for sure, I remember being moved by that too.

I thought Rocky VI was great, it was a real character piece rather than the usual 'I know what's coming next' Rocky fare. Casting Milo as his son was a genius choice too.

Co-sign....that´s what I´m saying.

He should do more character pieces in the future, maybe work on his image and change it a bit, like Clint Eastwood did.

Rocky VI was made in part to make up for the ridiculously awful Rocky V. Thing is, it succeeds. Watch them in order and skip the fifth one - works really well. It's a really good film. Not quite great, but definitely VERY good. So is the last Rambo. Sly's biggest problem is just that nobody will allow him to be anything else. He's been trying to get an Edgar Allen Poe (he's a huge fan) film he wrote made for over a decade.
