Seriously though, keep your receipt to show the mounties(if they show up) that you paid. No one is going to do the work involved to track down the missing $15 worth of gas no matter how easy it is to do, but they may report you as a drive-off. So the receipt is your ace in the hole. If you want to ease your conscience, make a donation or give a homeless guy $15. Going back to the station isn't going to help your situation one bit as they probably have no idea who got the extra go-juice if you paid cash.

I left a gas station last year after pre-paying at the pump. I got the gas I paid for($55) - no more, no less. A half hour later, a squad car shows up as I was outside with my family talking to some neighbors. The cop tells me that I was reported as a drive-off. So I tell him that I have my receipt and went and got it. The officer and I go to the gas station to straighten it out, but the clerk is adamant that I drove off without paying, even though I showed the receipt to him. The cop had to talk to the guy for several minutes to explain that the exact amount supposedly not paid for was charged to my credit card as stated on the time-stamped receipt. We left with the officer saying to the clerk that there was no theft.

I was pissed off. The a-hole at the counter should have apologized to me, but I left with him thinking I somehow magically stole some gas and printed my own receipt.

I always get a receipt and I tell everyone I know to always get a receipt for any amount of gas. Those fuckers can't keep track and will write down the first license plate they see when they think something isn't adding up.

or buy $15 worth of postage stamps and send them to Supa nod

my mum was filling her car with LPG and on first attempt hose wouldn't reach. With LPG it doesn't start flowing until you have attached the hose and screwed it on:

Second attempt she filled it up and when she went to pay, they charged her 2 amounts. Apparently $7 worth of gas was taken on first attempt. She said that was impossible, that much gas takes MUCH longer than 30 seconds to come out, plus she had never pressed the trigger. Even the guy behind the desk agreed it didn't sound right, but STILL MADE HER PAY. She had to come back the next day to take it up with the manager.

nutty she was pretty annoyed.

Yes you were wrong, but like other's have said, sometimes you can get away with a freebie, but since you've said this has happened before...hmmm I think I would have gone in and paid for it and $15 is a bit much to just drive off and not say anything about. I'm not judging because I've had instances at restaurants where I wasn't charged for all my drinks or side orders and just paid it like nothing happened and left...but if it were me, honestly, it would depend on what kind of day I'm having...but most likely, I wouldn't have let it go up to $25...I would have stopped it at $12 and then went inside, mentioned the girl's mistake and paid the extra $2. Just my two cents.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

See, I just rationalize that out by thinking that the waiter was being nice, or that he was mesmorized by my charm, magnitism, and sex appeal and decided to give me a few extra drinks on the house. I guess I'll ask instead of assuming from now on. biggrin

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

nod Exactly. I don't care if I'm getting only 70 cents worth of gas, I'm still getting a receipt for it.

I get really scared I'll get caught, so I probably would have gone in and reported it, prepared to pay. redface

That same chick has done it before a ways back.

3 weeks ago I went to pay for gas and my debit card got declined and I always check my bank. I was like wtf?? eek - It was the same chick that fucked up on this gas. Right after it got declined I went to another gas station and had no problem at all. Maybe she don't know her job well?

That still doesn't make it right.

And yes, it was wrong. Someone else's mistake does not make it less than what it is; stealing and cheap skating. I would have said something.

It's not too late to go back and pay anyways. And tell them your sorry. It would be the proper thing to do.

It was definitely "wrong" to keep pumping...but it's the same "wrong" as if you'd found a $100 bill in the parking lot of a mall and - instead of reporting it to the police - you kept it.

I can't say for sure whether or not I would've kept pumping or stopped...I suppose it depends on how broke I was at the time.

Also, if you believe in Karma, then one way or another you will lose $15 (or more) very soon.

I'm a firm believer in that. One time "my heart" told me to give $50 for something, but "my mind" did not want to fork up the loot. So I took the "cheap" road out. Next thing you know, 1 week later I end up getting a damned parking ticket for $55. whofarted

I think that gas station should temp-ban you for what you did. You took something that wasn't yours, even if you didn't mean to, didn't think you broke any rule, didn't violate any after-the-fact warning and meant no harm.
