I'm not that great, but my strategy is to try to always think 3-4, even 5 moves ahead. You have to have a plan and be offensive. If you allow the opponent to make moves that then force you to move a piece you don't want, you will never get ahead. The queen is the most valuable piece, in terms of movement -- don't lose her! The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found.
