It is rumored that soooo many people in Hollywood, and the music business are infected with herpes. I guess you better do some very good inspection of the "area" before you dive in, or receive a diver because there's no "swimming" back after catching that thing.
The strange thing about really promiscuous people is that they generally end up catching something somewhere along the way, but they remain undeterred and fearless.
Oh well, like one of the comedian's said (I think it was Eddie Murphy)... Compared to Aids, everything else is minimal risk. If you are afraid that you have HIV, and you are told that you have herpes, you'll jump up and scream Yaaaay!!!!! (Eddie said something like that...it's been a minute but you get the gist). Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

I remember Robert Townsend doing a routine on that subject. He said you'd be so happy that you don't have aids, you'd call your mom from the doctors office and say, "Ma, I got syphillis! I might go blind and my hair could fall out, but I'm gonna make it!!"
Of course, aids is more treatable than it was back then. Still, I would think that's the one to fear most.

Aren't Syphilis and gonorrhea the only curable ones?
And then herpes is treatable but not curable?

sounds about right | |

ok, I just check online. There are several curable ones including syphilis and gonorrhea.
I believe because they are bacterial infections.
Appears the viruses are different.
herpes, genital warts, HIV.
Either way, makes me REALLY paranoid to play the field anymore. It's just not worth it.

Wow. I remember growing up, education about STDs was a big thing and now it's all blase, whatever. AIDS was a huge scary disease (the big disease with the little name). When Magic Johnson was diagnosed it was like, damn, and when Eazy E died. I still get tested regularly! AIDS is better treated but the meds are plentiful and expensive. Many people have some form of herpes anyway. I can't fucks with HIV. (literally) if you don't know, please get educated. Most disease could be gone by now if people educated themselves and stayed clean and protected.

That may not help. A lot of people who have herpes are asymptomatic - ie, they show no signs of having it. And it can be spread without the carrier ever showing symptoms. Condoms are also of limited use against herpes, because the virus may be shed outside the area covered by a condom. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

True.
It's also true that having no symptoms and using condoms DOES reduce risk of transmission. |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
That is actually not true. That's why, on commercials for Valtrex, they say that even being on suppression therapy may not keep a person from spreading herpes. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I remember when the state of Alabama mandated that all schools had to teach 100% of students.
And since 100% of students in high schools had to take English/Grammer classes, it was up to our English/Grammar/Lit teachers to teach the material on HIV transmission and sex education.
The problem is that my English teacher was an ultra conservative/ultra religious southern gal, and because we students were allowed to ask any question without impunity, we kept asking her about various sexual acts in lewd and explicit details.
Throuhout the 2 hour session she had to talk about swallowing sperm vs not swallowing, anal verses vaginal sex...and the list goes on and on.
I'm pretty sure that class lead to her joining a church that tamed snakes.

Interesting. I've been reading your posts intently looking for something explicit enough to put in my signature, but so far you've only come close. I'll keep checking in on this thread though just in case. Hope springs eternal.

It is still possible to transmit, yes, but it also reduces the risk. The two aren't mutually exclusive. |

Not to mention the fact multiple strains of the virus can be spread not only through penetrative intercourse, but by oral-genital contact as well. So giving/getting head, which people generally consider much less... uh... "full-on," is also risky where herpes is regarded. [Edited 7/8/10 7:54am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Herpes can lie dormant for well over 10 years.. You may have slept with someone 8 years ago who had no idea they had it and in turn passed it on to you...You can actually "have" herpes right now and not know it because its just sitting dormant in your body... You may have already had outbreaks and thought maybe it was a pimple down there, some people never have "bad' outbreaks.. So try not to pass judgement on those who do have it...
This isnt directed at anyone "specifically" but everyone in general..

I doubt it's much more concentrated in Hollywood. Something like 1 in 6 to 1 in 5 of all American adults have HSV-2, the strain most accredited with genital outbreaks. That number increases when we consider other HSV strains (that people look upon with less of a stigma, despite the fact the viruses are almost genetically identical).

The medications nowadays for AIDS are indeed much better. The meds to treat HIV, which can lead to AIDS are actually very good.
I'm not sure what you mean with the bolded part, but people with HIV usually live a normal life, especially the ones who are treated with medications. (and who live in the Western part of the world) and are capable of having a perfectly normal sex life.
People in general, and kids especially need to get educated on safe sex and all the STD's that are out there and how to prevent getting infected.
They also need to be educated on what it actually means to have HIV. Of course it has a big impact on one’s life but it's no longer a death sentence. And the life expectancy for people with HIV who can- and are receiving treatment has increased tremendously.

What you are saying is true. However there are some people who don't look at all. Even if "looking" and "smelling" wards off only "some" of the cases...that "some" is a big deal especially if you are one of the ones who could have recognized it and avoided it. Many women say that they noticed a "bump" on the penis, but chose to ignore it, next thing you know...she ends up getting sick. There is no 100% fool proof way to avoid getting herpes even blood tests have some limitations because almost all of us have been exposed to the virus via chicken pox or cold sores. The virus stays in all of us for ever, and can tend to make a nasty lil "reprise" in many of us in the form of shingles (for those who has the chicken pox). Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

I have no way of verifying the rates in Hollywood which is why I said that it is "rumored". However, IF folks in Hollywood tend to have relationships moreso with peers / associates than with people on the "outside" then that would keep thier circle "tight" which could possibly account for the reported higher percentage. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

yes, and in the case of a Valtrex commercial that adding that disclaimer is something they do for legal reasons as much as to share practical advice My Legacy
