The Netherlands Win World Cup

The Netherlands Wins First World Cup and Ends 22-Year Streak Without a Title of Any Kind

(CBS/ AP) The Netherlands defeated Spain by a score of SCORE to SCORE to win its first World Cup title.

Even with Spain dominating possession, it was the Netherlands that had the best chance to score after 75 minutes of Sunday's foul-filled World Cup final.

Arjen Robben took a through ball from playmaker Wesley Sneijder and went one-on-one with goalkeeper Iker Casillas, but his 62nd-minute shot was kicked out for a corner by Casillas' right foot.

Before that, it was Spain that had the best chances to take the lead and win their first World Cup.

Defender Sergio Ramos sent a header from Xavi Hernandez's cross on target, but goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg made the save in the fifth minute. Spain striker David Villa's left-foot volley from Xabi Alonso's cross then hit the side-netting in the 12th.

Spain ended a 44-year barren spell when it won the 2008 European Championship and can become only the third team to be world and European champion at the same time.

Spain's exquisite talent is reminiscent of that of the Dutch when "Total Football" carried them to the 1974 and '78 finals.

The Netherlands' streak without a title only stood at 22 years.

Not really. It's common practice to have the chronicle written before things happen. That way you just have to fill in the gaps and your news is online 30 seconds after it happens.

You should double check before posting it though lol

I wanted a Germany/Holland final LOL. As usual with finals, the game wasn't much, but Spain deserved to win.

They played the sort of game geeky football pundits drool over. They were often great to watch, but I noticed that 4 goals in 4 games is a paltry amount (and the most minimal amount possible). Not what casual fans like myself want to see LOL. Sure, it got the job done, but I still didn't like their total lack of goals scored.

After a 1-0 defeat in their opening game, who would of thought it?

The Uruguay/Ghana game was the match I'll by far remember the most of this world cup, with Italy and Slovakia being runner up. Seeing USA scrape by Algeria in the dying seconds was also memorable (though bad for me personally as I support England).

Germany's 4-0 victory over Argentina probably being the most shocking scoreline, along with Portugals 7-0 KO of North Korea, which was made the more shocking considering their previous game against Brasil (2-1 to Brasil), where they fought gallantly.

Crucial part of the game is to get the ball in the net. Explain to me how one is not better, but still scores the most goals? confuse

Becoming world champion by scoring only 8 goals throughout the whole tournament is quite an accomplishment, but is it good football?
