Before Twitter, Facebook, or MySpace, there was WebTV! (Remember THAT?!?) [img:$uid]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/38/Webtv.jpg[/img:$uid]
Oh hell yeah, I remember the good old days of WebTV. Those good old days were the second half of the 1990's to be exact!
Back then, it was all about internet access & chat rooms for some of us that didn't make enough to buy a new computer straight away. WebTV was an affordable option.
I remember paying $99 for a WebTV console. All I have to do was hook it up to my television & my phone line, then call this toll free number to get the service itself to work and then surf away! I remember the very first day that I was talking in those chat rooms that I ended up talking until the very next morning still talking to people. Yes, I was lacking sheep because of Web TV addictions. But those were good times nonetheless.
The very last time I notice a WebTV console, the company were brought out by Microsoft to to be renamed MSN TV. But before that point, I was already a proud owner of a desktop PC from Gateway (which I'm still using today) that I brought in late 2001/early 2002. I think the debut of laptop computers, gaming consoles with modems (Playstations, Xboxs, etc.), & desktop PCs with lower price tags pretty much ended the Web TV era of computer technology. But for one moment in time, Web TV was awesome.
EDIT to post a webtv commercial. [Edited 6/30/10 7:02am]

Thanks for the history lesson. Never had one. But I was big into dial-up back then with the huge monitor that took up all your desk space. Also there was no such thing as a "pop up blocker", kinda sucked looking at porn back then. I don't miss those days at all.

Haha, my mother had one. It was terrible. I hated that thing. I do nothing professionally. I only do things for fun. johnart: Acrylic's old bras is where tits of all sizes go to frolic after they die. Tit Heaven.

That thing was such a disaster.
BUT it convinced me to get a damn computer though.
But it was an VAIO laptop. [Edited 6/23/10 12:24pm] [Edited 6/23/10 12:24pm]

I had one Literally threw it in a box after I got my PC in 2006 "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Why did you hated so much?

Same here. Except in my case, it was also because I could never download music with Web TV at all. It was definitely time to save money for a PC.

THIS is classic! It's the theme music to WebTV login:

Sounds like a late 80's video game.

Because it's sound dated. And I'm a fan of dated electronic music.

I remember I had a friend back in '98 that was Hell-bent on getting WebTV, mainly because he was so intimidated by trying to learn how to operate a PC. I used to tell him that there was no future in WebTV and he could best spend his time learning Windows.
Would love to know where he's at today, so I can say "I TOLD YOU SO!"

To be perfectly honest, I'm disappointed that WebTV/MSN TV isn't available in 2010. At least people on fixed income (like old folks) could still have some kind of internet access.
And BTW, I hope you friend was wise to at least buy himself a little netbook.
