Today, many follow William Strauss and Neil Howe's demographics in defining the Millennials. Respected researchers William Strauss and Neil Howe have been influential in defining American generations in their book Generations: The History of America's Future, 1584 to 2069 (1991) and Millennials Rising: The Next Great Generation (2000). They use the start year as 1982, and believe that the coming of age of the class of 2000 high school graduates sharply contrasts with those born before them, and those born after them, due to the attention they received from the media and what influenced them politically.[32][33]

If you're going to get into the whole Strauss and Howe theory of Generations, then you will notice that they lump the Interbellum and GI generations together as one GI generation, even though older members of this generation (the ones born in the 1900's and old enough to partake in the roaring 20's as adults) were too old to fight in WWII but did experience the depths of the Great Depression.

They also list the beginning of the Baby Boom generation as 1943, since those born at the end of the WWII were too young to remeber the war first-hand. They also entered their adult years when JFK was assassinated and the Beatles came to America. They list the end of the Baby Boom generation as 1961 and not 1964, because they noticed that the later-born demographic of people born from 1961 to 1964 exhibited more traits socially witrh Gen-X than their Boomer elders.

As far as Gen-X, they listed them as two distinct phases; the Atari wave, who were those that came of age during the 80's, played video games on the Atari 2600, listened to new wave, punk, hair metal, and early hip-hop, and grew up loving The Cosby Show on TV. Then there was the Nintendo wave, who came of age during the 90's, listened to grunge and gangsta rap, was increeasingly more tech savvy, was the first to surf the internet, and grew up loving Seinfeld and Friends on TV.

And though marketers refer to the generation following X as Y, they prefer to label themselves the Millennial generation. They are the most tech savvy, the most diverse, the most interconnected of all the generations. They also list the end of that generation around 1999. The following generation is informally listed as Generation Z, but since they are all only young children at this point, they don't yet have any impact on the public discourse.

Well, as an Xer, I tend to agree. But I consider myself more of an 8-Track wave, which spent its formative years in the 70's and grew into adolescence and adulthood in the 1980's.

I remember the Atari as a 70's invention, recall listening to disco and 70's pop as much as hip-hop, Prince, etc. in the 80's, and look at Star Wars as a larger cultural landmark than the Cosby Show. I associate music with the record player and the 8-track as well as the Walkman and CD player. The 8-Track Wave are a bridge between the Atari/Nintendo Waves and the Baby Boomers.

One of my problems with generational comparisons as a whole is that they sell the experience of the 70's short.

Nice post.

I'm from Generation X but I'm one of the older ones (born in 1967) so I have much better taste than what's usually considered a generation X'er. They really should redefine the groups because most people born in 1967 have totally different tastes than people born in 1979. Hell, I was in the skating rinks enjoying the disco era and they were being born. I like disco and funk and most of them like shit hop and adult contemporary. My tastes are more Baby Boomer.

Andy is a four letter word.

Well, if we're going to be judged on our collective merits (Baby Boomers and early GenXers), for everything we've accomplished, and for all the good times we've had, in 2010, our legacy currently includes:

- Massive deficits and indebtedness;

- The worst economic stratification in recent history;

- An economic model that wilfully ignored the need for alternative energies;

- melting ice caps;

- The Iraq War;

- Numerous genocides occurring on our watch; and

- An entitlement system that could pose a serious risk to our children's and grandchildren's well-being, all because of our procrastination.

I could go on. But you get the point.
