I'm learning a lot about myself from me and from others with this thread.

I have learnt that there is a difference for me between sucking up to someone and enjoying interaction with a person.

I'm reminded that leaders emerge and people choose to follow.

I am in some corner feeling humble as I am a hypocrite... Since starting writing in this thread, I have realised, by my sometimes too aware mind, that since being here, I have been a sheep myself...

I think there is a lot to do with feelings of security/insecurity as a person for me at times.

I think that it is not so much the ideas around in-groups, but what happens within them. For me, I guess I'm having some kind of trigger going off from way back when in my school days, with some things that I read here that quite frankly, are nasty. Obviously, this is reminding me of events that have happened to me in my school days.

I respect your mind and the way you come across!
I also would hate to be thought of as a sheep for selecting certain peoples posts...Certainly people are likely to group off accordingly with what they relate to. I love a mix of Intellect crossed with the ability to not take themselves to seriously... SO i head in that direction most often.
I have read a good many solid posts that I enjoy or learn from but haven't responded to. Maybe because I have no opinion or because I feel it has all been said.
I have never paid attention to the ratings on a post. I couldn't care less... I also notice that titles count. I may tend to open particular catchy titles.

And I'd say it was both...trust me, Ice, there are TONS of people here who post on your threads simply cuz it's yours...gives them a chance to "talk" to you if they haven't before...and your threads also serve the dual purpose of providing those who surround themselves around you a place to "hang out" and shoot the shit...If any of your threads sink like a stone, it's only because you start so many threads 'round these parts that it's unnecessary to post on all of 'em in order to talk to ya...lol...not to mention that if you post something serious, you'll find out that many people who tend to post on your threads will suddenly stop, waiting for you to be irreverant, sarcastic and cynical...cuz those types of threads are easier and more enjoyable to join with you in to many people (at least to many here in the GD forum...the P&R forum is a whole different thang...)

You said in both of these what I felt frustrated trying to identify. I'm sorry Ice, I only saw a portion of what I consider the truth of the matter, ie. the sheep bit, mainly. What WB has said conveys a more whole picture of this issue and how I think similarly to how he has expressed it.

Actually, what you said and what I said are very similar...that many of Ice's threads are seen as "hangouts" for his P.org friends, which 'splains why they get 5,000 posts to other threads' 9...it would be a mistake to assume that the only reason Ice's threads (or even threads about IceNine) get so many responses is because the topics are fascinating...yet it would be a mistake to think that the only reason people peruse his threads is because they wanna be part of the "In Crowd"...IceNine has established himself and his posts & threads as being worth reading...so a lot of people automatically check out whatever he has to say...

I would agree with you if it weren't a fact that many of my threads just sit there stinking the joint up... there have been three or four of them in the last two days, in fact.

Now, if everyone would have jumped in and started discussing Polish literature on my Stanislaw Lem thread, I would have think that you might be right... unfortunately, that one died a cruel death and I kept performing CPR on the fucking thing until I found a couple of people who had read "solaris," but it was not successful.

Trust me... people ONLY reply when they think that the subject is either interesting, funny, stupid or horrible.

biggrin

From my time here, I would say that it is a reality that you are a very popular orger!

And I would say that it is because I post things that are funny and/or controversial.

When I post a shitty thread it goes to the bottom like a fucking rock, just like anyone else's shitty threads. It is a fact.

Yeah, I get you... understood, agreed...

I dunno Icenine, I think for me, it's about the sheep aspect of people sucking up to you that repells me... and they do do that... And I know that you are not responsible for other people. I could be wrong... it's just my view on things, lol.

wait a second, RED, first you project your PERCEPTION of a group situation "it's about the sheep aspect of people" onto your peers, then you label this favorable group response "sucking up to you that repells me" 'sucking up'??

sounds like plain old envy to me. i read and respond to Ice's posts for the simple fact that they are entertaining. he is very literate (he would never spell 'repel' 'repell', for example) and i like his sense of humor. i avoid other people's posts because i don't feel the same about their online personalities and the content of their posts. that's all it is, really

Do you really think that is the case? if so I find it surprising..lol I think that people here are failing to recognise that some orgers are friends, whose friendship extends beyond the org. They post on each others threads because they may share similar views on a given topic etc, or they enjoy the interaction. big grin

Valid points. However I think that it is also important to realise that establishing yourself at the org is not necessarily a deliberate attempt on behalf of an orger to from a clique around him or herself. Actually I can't think of any orger who has done this. Some people are extrovert and attract a lot attention, they are being themselves. While others are content to just be loitering in the background. The louder you are the more attention you attract, be it good or bad.
