In other NBA news, Izzo's staying at Michigan State;
Tom Izzo decided to stay at Michigan State instead of taking over the Cleveland Cavaliers, and only he knows if it's because the world's most famous free agent refused to meet with him. Izzo, one of the best coaches in college basketball, has turned down a lucrative multi-year deal reportedly worth $6 million a year from the Cleveland Cavaliers and will remain as head coach at Michigan State, where he started his head coaching career. Izzo took nine days to make his final decision, making a trip to Cleveland last Thursday to meet with owner and Michigan State alum Dan Gilbert and Cavs management. He was teary-eyed and surrounded by his players and ex-players when he spoke to the media Tuesday night. "It's been an agonizing week as I tried to make a decision on a once in a lifetime opportunity," Izzo said. "I apologize for the time the process has taken, but sometimes there are opportunities that come about that need to be thoroughly examined. "I'm no different than other successful coaches in that I've had multiple inquiries before. But this one was uniquely intriguing. There was a lot of information to gather and some of it wasn't easily obtainable. When making a life decision, I felt I owed it to myself and my family to do my due diligence. From that, I never wavered. And I'm proud to say I'm here for life at Michigan State. "Just as I decided to stay home, I hope that a 6-8, 270-pound forward in Cleveland decides to stay home." Izzo was speaking of course about reigning NBA MVP LeBron James, who can become a free agent July 1. Michigan State never pressured Izzo to make a decision, allowing him time to gather information on a possible jump to the NBA. "Over the past week, Coach Izzo addressed a personal opportunity that he did not seek out," Michigan State AD Mark Hollis said. "He owed it to himself to completely understand, evaluate, reflect and come to a conclusion that will be part of his life. And we owed it to him to allow this process to happen. "Throughout the process, his heart was always at MSU." Izzo, 55, has coached the Spartans to a national championship in 2000 and and six Final Fours in his 15 years on the job. But the Cavs job seriously intrigued him. But there was a huge variable Izzo could not control. He could never ascertain whether James was going to resign with the Cavs. James reportedly endorsed Izzo and would play for him, but refused to meet with him. Izzo, who is making close to $3 million and has a contract that runs through 2016, can expect to receive a sizable raise, but to his credit, he never used it as leverage. He has been romanced in the past by NBA teams, most notably the Atlanta Hawks in 2000, the year Izzo coached the Spartans to a national title. He turned down that job and others. Izzo said earlier this spring that he wanted to win a second title at Michigan State. This most likely will be his final flirtation with the NBA. "I guess I just got the feeling I wanted to be like be a (Bo) Schembechler, (Joe) Paterno and now (Tom) Osborne, guys in our league who withstood the test of time, were tempted and decided where their heart was," Izzo said. "I'm a lifer and damn proud of it."

What a complete shit show last night! Ouch! I lost my faith in the C's. They are gonna need a miracle to win game 7 tomorrow. They don't deserve to win after last nights 'performance' if you even want to call it that.

- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
They have a chance to redeem themselves. But not having Perkins' physical presence is a big blow.

With Perk would have been a challenge. Without him? They are TOAST. The Lakers have not forgotton about 2008. They OWE the Celtics a lil something.

Didn't I say they were gonna go for seven games? It seem for every momentum the Celtics have, the other team (no matter who it is, Chicago from last year, Cleveland from either last year or this year or L.A. now) always find a way to SPANK 'em. That's why I was like "don't count L.A. out." I was not shocked by last night's performance at all.

yup. those aren't basketball players. they actors. all the whining and flopping... basketball died after MJ, Larry, Magic, Isiah, Hakeem, and hand checking. Back in the day, when the refs called a foul players actually got fouled.
college basketball is fake too. C'mon Duke vs Butler for the National Championship ??? None of those players will make an NBA impact. [Edited 6/16/10 13:46pm]
