Prince gave me low self-esteem as a teenager

Hey, Vanity 6 came out with Nasty Girl when I was like 11 - 12 years old. Purple Rain came out when I was 13 years old. I adored Prince so much as a teen. Yet none of those women that he appeared to have affection for even resembled me. That kinda messed with my head as a young kid. They were all very beautiful women, but where were the black ones, or the ones that looked like him? His complexion, his hair texture, his african features? This is why it's important that these little girls not focus on these so called size 0 models, and love and enjoy their own bodies. No matter how pretty I looked at 13. I could never look like a Vanity or an Appollonia, and I wondered for many years why he didn't pick women who at least looked like he did. Prince never represented the "sisters". When I see Bria, I'm like wow she's georgous, but more of the same. I guess it's a formula that's worked for him all this time. Or maybe it "hasn't worked" ...who's to say.

And yeah a few of you will call out other biracial people such as Vanity, and Troy Beyer, but I'm just saying...Prince never has been seen photographed with someone of a love interest that looked like anything that he looks like, and dare he seriously be photographed with anyone who is of dark complexion that were black and his love interest. If you got the pictures, please post them. Prince no longer effects my self esteem, but as an adult, I can see how young kids get awe inspired by models, and "the look", and how it devastates them (ie. anorexia, bullemia) if they don't have it.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

This entire post feels like flame bait, but Prince has a very light complection. He often looks lighter than some of his latino love interests.

Spike Lee has often criticized Prince in the past for his earlier years didn't use black women as love interests. Prince has responded that he's evolved (or some such thing). I don't remember the magazine this interview took place in but I remember reading it.

Either way, I agree that it was sort of strange seeing only white women depicted as love interests in the past--Diamond & Pearl, Appolonia, etc. Also the two black dudes fighting over Mary Sharon was a bit unerving since the only black 'client' of Christohper Tracey repulses him so much in a scene that he runs screaming---now that shit was fucked up.

But Prince evolved. We all evolve. You should probably have turned Prince off if he affected you in such a way. Actuallly, you should probably tune ANY dude off that affects you this way.

What I'm ultimately saying is you need to seek help....now.

Nah, no need to seek help. I know who I am, and I know my worth. However, I was just mentioning how big wig stars and "teen idols" can really effect teenagers, and that negative effect can tend to be even more magnified when the two top rock stars of the 1980's are Black, and none of them are with sisters. Michael Jackson with Brook Shields and Emmanuel Lewis, and Bubbles, and Prince with everything that allowed him to get as far away from black as possible without going for totally white. That made many young black women / girls feel not so good back then. Thats what my point was.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

I heard that on this board, but I never saw anything public about it back in the day.

Yeah Spike Lee was talking smack until he had to hit Prince up for a couple of Mil so that he could finish completing Malcom X, as he ran over budget. Betcha Prince could date as many non blacks as he wanted after that, and it was ok with Spike. LOL.

Seriously, Spike almost had a real nervous breakdown trying to complete Malcolm X. You had so called militant blacks in the black community with deep concern about how Elijah Mohammad was going to be portrayed, and they threatened Spike...even with violence. Of course you had "The Man" that didn't want to see anything really positive come out of the movie because they were afraid that it could incite some sort of riot or black power uprising, and then then what little money he had to make the movie, went over budget. So I know for sure that Spike had to run to Prince with his tail between his legs (or maybe Prince offered), Bill Cosby, Oprah, and I believe either Michael Jordan or Will Smith also contributed. Malcom X was overproduced, but it was one of the best movies ever bought from book to film in my opinion. Great movie. For all my white brothers and sisters who have not seen it, Please check it out....very good film. Be prepared to sit on your inflatable doughnuts because it is a long flick.

Now if Prince woulda dated that mannequin looking chick when I was a teen, I would have felt like Miss Universe compared to that.

I'm not trying to have a whole song and dance open up about it. I'm just stating how the 2 most important Black Rock icons in the world made me feel as a young teenager. The man is free to continue to date whom he wishes. I just was really young and into him and it mattered at the time.
