I love that film. It's funny how one film can make you appreciate a director. I've never been that keen on Lee until I watched that. I've since rewatched most of his movies and I like them all much more now as a catalogue of work rather than individual films.

I only watched that last summer. I didn't realise Scorsese was so versatile! It's such a different genre than what you'd usually expect from him. Same with Shutter Island. I wish he'd step out of his comfort zone more often.

He truly is nod I suggest you to watch Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore starring Ellen Burstyn & Kris Kristofferson, the movie came out when "Mean Streets" mania was still fresh on people's minds.

That film along with "After Hours" are two of my FAVE films by Scorsese.

Thanks for the tip, I always know when you recommend something it's worth checking out smile I've seen most of his work from the 90's onwards but only a couple of his 70's and 80's films, and only the 'classics' of course e.g. Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Raging Bull etc. I enjoyed them but found them a little same-y. I much prefer him when he's doing something different like Age of Innocence mushy

I like versatile writers/performers/directors. This movie took me by surprise too. It's in no way Day-Lewis' best role ever, but he's one of the most interesting actors alive. And this role is sublime nonetheless.

Yeah me too, probably Pfiffer's best role to date. To be honest I find actors like him a little too pretentious to be interesting. You know watching any of his films the chances of him giving a poor performance are quite low, but I don't know I just don't get excited when he releases a film shrug Actors in general actually, I do with actresses though confuse

You're not alone, the bulk of my admiration goes out to ladies of musical or cinematic persuasion nod As for actors, I'm partial to "character" actors. I think Daniel is DEF from that category.

And speaking of Pfiffer, I wanna watch this film....

You're right, Daniel Day Lewis is a character actor, a very good one at that. But you know like how there are some singers who may be technically perfect but just leave you cold and flat? I get that with him. Speaking of Pfeiffer, have you seen The Fabulous Baker Boys? or 'Love Field'?

I really liked Dangerous Liaisons. It gets bonus points for also having a very young Keanu in it mushy He's the only actor whom I really look forward to their next film. People always assume I'm joking when I list him as my favourite. I watch enough films that I should know better but I don't know what it is about him. I genuinely think he's a good actor lol.

That's cool. I think one of the reason's I got put off with Spike was because I was too young to get the hype of Do The Right Thing. To be honest I still don't get it. Then when I got to my teens and was watching his movies he was releasing stuff like Get on The Bus, She Hate Me, etc. Sorry but nothing can justify She Hate Me lol But on the whole I like him now smile

Favorite Director: John Carpenter

Movie: Halloween

Reason: Classic horror.

Favorite Actor: Seth Rogan

Movie: Superbad

Reason: I've loved Seth ever since his "Freaks & Geeks" character in the late '90s. He is hilarious, without even trying.

Favorite Actress: Helena Bonham Carter

Movie: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Reason: The woman is fucking batty, and I love it.

It was a break from his norm but what a beautiful piece of work it was. Until then I never knew he was that diverse. Thought he was stuck with his "black thing" and like you said, it made me appreciate his earlier works even more.

I saw Do The Right Thing as soon as it came out in the neighborhood theatre in 1989. It had a profound effect on me, and remains one of my favorite films to this day.

I lost interest in his movies along the way, around the time of Jungle Fever. Very uneven, even Malcolm X was patchy.

I would give him another chance though. I'd love to see his documentaries Four Little Girls and the one about Katrina.

I appreciate his social conscience.

Xibalba

Actor:

Tom Cruise: Vanilla Sky

Actress:

Jodie Foster: Contact

Director:

Darren Aronofsky: The Fountain

These are not my 'absolute' favorites as such, (with the exception of 'The Fountain' and 'Vanilla Sky' being in my top 3 favorite movies of all time), but each of these movies are profoundly moving and personal to me, and I cherish them very dearly - especially after losing my Father in January, now even moreso. Somehow, they bring me comfort.

Actress-

Judy Garland-The Wizard of Oz

I loved this movie ever since I was a kid, watching it every year on TV.

Actor-

Toshiro Mifune-Seven Samurai

An acting tour-de-force from one of the best movies ever made, period. I think not too many people have this movie on their radar. I guess cuz it's a Japanese film?

Director-

Akira Kurosawa

See reason above. This movie got it all, action, drama, some comedy as well. A bittersweet ending though. If you have the Criterion DVD, I recommend watching it again with the audio commentary, you'll get a greater insight on Akira's mastery as a Director.

I love The Magnificent Seven (which is based on Seven Samurai), but hadn't seen the latter until TCM did a Kurosawa "thing" several months ago. It's a great film. nod
