I had this discussion a while back. Can't remember if it was here or another board. But her lips actually were like that when she was a little girl. I had some pics of her at only about 12 and her lips were big then. I always thought they were fake too.

Don't get me wrong, I love Angelina. I think she is a stunning, gorgeous woman. I just think there were better choices for the role. Still like to see what she will do with it. shrug I wish like hell Mel was directing. What he did with Passion and Apocalypto was amazing. clapping

nod I own both... awesome movies!

Now back to the subject at hand.

Although, I do adore Angelina. I think she's a fantastic actress and I do look forward to her roles but Cleopatra? whofarted

Umm...NO!

I think Mrs. Jada Pinkett Smith has the right look and as I've learned in the last few days of my travels around the internet...reading the criticisms that's been thrown at the Smith Family just because little Jaden is following in his parents footsteps...the "attitude" for the role!

Which is code for..."a Regal and Uppity" persona...whofarted...to blow Angelina out of the water...in this particular part!

I hope, she and her husband say, "Fuck the dumb shit!" and buy the rights to the movie! It's been done before and heaven knows, they can afford to do it!

A very young Angelina and her Mom.

Angelina Jolie is part Native American; Haudenosaunee. She and her mother were involved with them for a while (I use past tense [were] only b/c her mom died, I think, last year..)

http://blogs.suntimes.com...rt_ii.html

probably part of why Marianne Pearl wanted AJ to play her in that movie; she's got some color in her heritage.. lol
-- Genetics are a funny thing; I have a friend who's son is 1/4 black, 3/4 white, and that boy (he's 11 or 12 now) looks "whiter" than most white ppl I know.. shrug

As for this Cleopatra movie... which Cleopatra is this about?? There were 7 of them (like English King Henry XVIII, French King Louis XIV) --- and her line, the Ptolemaic, is Hellenic (Greek). Egypt's right on the Mediterranean Sea; they've had black rulers, and rulers from other continents/countries in that area. Maybe Jolie will be/look fine...? shrug

~ From what I've read over the years (I fell in love with Egypt as a child, reading about archaeology [and thanks to an uncle with roots there]), Cleopatra VII (the one Liz Taylor played, the Marcus Antonius [Mark Antony] love story), though was pale and spoke Greek, she was the first ruler of her family's line to learn the Egyptian language and adopt their religious beliefs.

My uncle's father is from Alexandria, Egypt (where that one, VII, died) but they're not black (persian/middle eastern). I remember reading when I was a kid in the '80s that most Egyptians weren't black; they're just on the African continent.

* this reminds me of another convo I read about race/Africa --- many people forget; not everybody who's African is black. When Charlize Theron has kids here (I believe her bf is American; they live here), technically they will be African-American. lol wink

Neophyte

Not interested!

Don't particularly care if Cleopatra is played by a black actress (although it would be nice to see a different view) or a white actress or anything in between...just sick and tired of seeing the same actresses (especially Jolie) in every new movie.

Can't Hollywood try something different?

According to many Cleo was homely. Now I don't know how Liz Taylor and others found that out but she didn't rely solely on looks to seduce.

ask yourself, in an area that people considered themselves basically European, what would make Cleopatra be considered homely....and you probably have your answer right there in regards to her skin tone. Also the people around the Mediterranean were never pale, they were swarthy (olive/dark skin tones). Very hard to live right next to the equator and be pale. Greeks Italians, Spaiards, Middle Easterners, and North Africans are all swarthy.

Funny you should ask me this question. My mother was 100% Italian with blue/black hair and deep olive complexion. She had gigandic dark brown eyes and beautifully arched eye brows and a long roman nose. To me she looked more East Indian than Italians. The large Puerto Rican population in Worcester always mistook her for one of their own. I thought she was gorgeous and so did my dad who was blonde haired and blue eyed and as irish as Liz. Dad was a merle Oberon fan big time and mom was a movie star beauty in his eyes. However my mom's sisters were much much fairer then she and often green eyed. She felt uncomfortable with her darkness and her nose and often said if she could she would have a nose job. Every single one of her sisters (five) would tell you that she was the beauty in the family but she never thought so.

As a teen she dated a dark skin boy that was from Lebanese descent. His mother took the two of them aside and told them "you can not continue to see each other. you are both dark. if you get married you will have dark kids. Do you want to do that to your kids/eek eek eek So despite being in love they seperated and she started dating only men who were much lighter then herself I guess to give her kids a chance at fitting in. eek my mother is dead now, but let me tell you even now when I think of this EXTREMELY beautiful woman being so very self concious I tear up. It's painful to think of someone measuring their beauty by a whole different standard. It would be like Marylyn Monroe thinking she was ugly because she wasn't tall and lanky like a Ford Model or Audrey Hepburn. (It is also why I hate weaves but I won't go there).

So again, was Cleopatra homely or did she look more like Cher-of-old and less like Liz Taylor? M.I.A. has big features, is she ugly by Hollywood standards, how about the late Phyllis Hyman? To me they are both beautiful as is the tiny featured Liz Taylor and Nicole Kidman. shrug

Cleopatra is SO over-exposed. Can we see a film about Nefertiti, or better yet Hatshepsut, the FIRST female Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt? Not Queen, not Consort, not Co-Regent – Pharaoh. I’d def pay to see that,,,couple of time.

nod Damn shame, Hollywood is so lackluster and greedy that they have lost ALL creative juices. It takes regular folk to come up with original ideas for them disbelief

I think in all honesty if your going to make a movie with the kind of huge budget that these historic flicks demand, you want to know you have an audience that will at least help you break even.

2 questions.

Will a white audience go to see a historic film where the cast is not white?

Will an African American audience go see a film set in ancient times and not at all funny even if the cast is made up of predominately African Americans and other people of color?

Tyler Perry makes a ton of money and I don't know if he would be quite as wealthy as he is had he specialized in historical movies. Lets face it, the stories of Harriet Tubman, Soujourner Truth and Rosa Parks are fascinating but would people turn up in large #'s to see them played out on the big screen? Those are the million dollar questions.

I love this post. Dead I love when you talk about your parents and give such vivid descriptions. mushy

Speaking of European standards of beauty and Hollywood standards of beauty...I think these are steadfastedly changing. Angelina would not have survived 1950s hollywood because of her lips alone. John Voight (Czech) had the big lips and so did Angie's mom (French Canadian/Indian) so she and her brother came out with extra large pouts. I think her overall look is somewhat exotic but still european looking. She's got the big cheekbones as well. Still....she would not make a convincing Cleopatra IMO.

So now at least big lips are OK and even more desireable. Think of all the phony fish faced actresses. Now the only "bad" feature is big noses (either long or wide).

Most expensive movies like that have to have big name stars in them to recoup the money. So, here's the test: what big name black women is a big enough star that she could get lots of people to see the film?

Angelina Jolie is a very beautiful woman with exotic features. Her brother has the same features. I agree that in the 1950s she probably would have been passed up for many roles. Somehow Angelina reminds me of a young Leslie Caron (who I believe was french, but had exotic features), who was an actress around the 50s. Not sure which actress today could play a convincing and strong Cleopatra, but I think if I had a choice, it would be Thandie Newton, mainly because I think she has some strong acting skills.

I finally caught on to the fact that my mother did not see herself as I did when we went to Spags one day. Spags was a giant sell-anything store alot like Building 19, Ocean State Job lot etc. Anyway they were one of the only places in Worcester that had huge bags of rice for cheap and alot of Asian shopped there, especially East Indians.

One day a group of East Indian women, all with long blue-black hair like my moms, wearing those beautiful sah-rees (spelling is different of course) came in. Again, most American women were wearing either denim or other dull colors and I just could not believe how stunning they looked. I got soooo excited and I said Mom, those women look just like YOU!!! I meant it totally as a huge complement but she turned deep red and it was obvious that she did not take it that way. I was so shocked. So shocked that my mother could not see beauty the way that I did and the fact that I thought her beauty was so obvious. I cry every time I think of it.

There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.

In an Essence.com story called "Another White Actress to Play Cleopatra?," the author writes, "Honestly, I don't care how full Angelina Jolie's lips are, how many African children she adopts, or how bronzed her skin will become for the film, I firmly believe this role should have gone to a black woman."

(Jolie, 35, adopted Zahara, 5, from Ethiopia, and gave birth to Shiloh, 3, in Namibia. She and Brad Pitt are also parents to Maddox, 8, Pax, 6, and twins Knox and Viv, 23 months.)

The writer went on, "Were Vanessa Williams, Halle Berry and Thandie Newton unavailable for auditions that day? Why does Hollywood think it’s even slightly plausible to cast white women in roles that would be more sensible to cast a black actress for? Especially when that role is an African queen."

Clutchmagonline.com notes the Egyptian queen has always been played by white women in the past: Claudette Colbert in 1934, Vivien Leigh in 1945 and the most famous Cleopatra to date, Elizabeth Taylor in 1963.

Stacy Schiff, who wrote the book on which the film is based, Cleopatra: A Life, threw her support behind Jolie in USA Today. "I think [Jolie] be perfect for it and I can see a possible Oscar in her future,” she said. "Physically, she’s got the perfect look." Producer Scott Rudin developed the adaptation "for and with Jolie."

Michael Pietsch, publisher of Little, Brown (which will release Schiff's book this November) told UsMagazine.com: "Angelina Jolie radiates grace and power, exactly the qualities that Stacy Schiff finds in her biography of the most intriguing ruler who ever lived."

This wouldn't be the first time Jolie has come under fire for playing a woman of color. She starred as Mariane Pearl, who is Afro-Cuban/Dutch, in 2007's A Mighty Heart.
