Racial issues are inherent in a discussion of a powerful African Queen whose story has been told time and time again, always with a white woman in the role.

The thread started as a discussion of one figure and one role, but it's impossible to ignore the larger implications.

It's another example of subliminally reinforcing the "white is right" concept - a powerful, seductive historical figure MUST be white! For the most part, people want to see persons of color in roles like that movie The Blind Side - non-threatening, illiterate, and in need of a Great White Hope like Sandra Bullock to save them and bring them into the wonderful world of whiteness.
