Chronicles of an Intramural Basketball Captain: Volume 2 Today, our team (the Mathletes) played our second game of the season. Only seven people showed up for the game, as some of our players were too busy.
We were SMOKED. We lost by a whopping 70-40. The loss, however, was not an unbiased one. I'm not usually one to complain about referees. I realize that the purpose of intramural sports is to give amateur players a chance to get together for some organized basketball. It is meant to be fun. However, when the officiating interferes with the feeling of fun, something is wrong. During the entire first half, fouls on the other team were nonexistent, despite the game being fairly physical. I know personally that I was fouled quite a few times without any blown whistle. Big deal, right? The refs are letting the game be played, right? Wrong. The virtue of physical play was not granted to our team. It didn't matter, though. We would have been beaten fairly handily without the aid of the referees. We were hanging tight in the first half, tied at 17 apiece, when the refereeing began to become less than fair. I think it took the drive out of our team, and we fell behind by 13 at the half. It was more difficult keeping the more temperamental players calm. The second half proved to be more fair, but most of our players stopped caring and the blowout ensued. Luckily, at that point our players started to actually enjoy the game and we didn't feel demoralized. Personally, I had a bad game. I am 6'3.5" and am not used to playing the position of point guard, but was relegated to that position due to the fact that our better point guards were not present. I scored 19 points on 9-20 shooting and grabbed about 8 boards, but I was a PALTRY 1-6 from the free throw line. That is unforgivable! I think spraining my wrist during the first half may have contributed, but I have played through pain before. I just never got into the flow of the game, despite being in for all but 2 minutes. Our next game is next Tuesday. Hopefully the result will be better! Regardless of tonight's performance, it is good to be part of an intramural team.

Good to hear someone else plays the game. I'm in a team with some guys and it sounds like some of our games mirror yours. Keep it up, it can't get worse.

With all this basketball gibberish it might as well be written in Greek. To me anyway. No offence intended Ian. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

I'm a grad student, but I'm by far the youngest. I'm 22 playing with guys whose ages range from 24-45.

I can't see our team playing 3 times a week. I think we would have players dying on us.
