ORG QUESTION OF THE DAY:

So why are we so quick to embrace the notion that teens will fuck for the sake of fucking rather than encourage them to maintain their virginity until they meet a worthy lover and potential life partner? With all the diseases, teen pregnancies, children raised by single parents, children living in poverty, porn addiction, lack of intimacy, sexting, and people who have a hard time maintaining relationships...wouldn't it make sense to encourage virginity and relationship building among this next generation?

My parents didn't have to tell me anything. We had two girls in our class who were preggo with no boyfriends/husbands. I think one of them dropped out eventually.

Perhaps it's because the sensibleness in virginity and, more broadly, sexual abstinence is not predicated upon age, but rather a principle we ourselves are less inclined to engender these days. The biological necessity to reproduce notwithstanding, if maintaining abstinence until we've found suitable life partners is somehow good for the young folk, then it's good for us old folk. Fewer of us old folk are willing to believe in and live by that principle (for better or worse), so fewer of us are championing it.

Teens go through enough shit these days, they need support and they need to know how to deal with very real situations.

Sexual needs are a very real need and this topic needs to be addressed openly and without shame. The problem of teen sex lies with adults, not teens. Teens are just using poor solutions to a very primal need.

Oh my god that is horrific. Those poor girls. If that had happened to me I would be on a killing spree of some sort. From what I hear...a lot of the kids are home schooled and score better than kids in a traditional class setting. They have a lower divorce rate and hardly any teen pregnancy. I honestly believe that people have different sex drives so some teens may actually not have such a strong urge and can abstain from sex.

Religion practised property and in good balance is great for teaching teens proper values IF the parents aren't religious nut jobs.

It's unrealistic. You have your hormones, the curiousity, the culture and what we see, the fact that they want to have sex, and the fact that the parents don't want you to do it or they treat as if it's a big bad evil and don't talk about it at all. And virgins - especially guys - are pratically deemed lame. The Jonas Brothers couldn't even make it seem cool. That's said, I don't think a lot of parents neccessarily teach or have a decent discussion when it comes it comes to sex and choice. Of course, that's just my experience and what I take from it.

You hit on an interesting point... some things should stay private.

I drilled my son NOT to tell his friends about his sexual status.

I told him to tell his friends that his sex life (or lack thereof) was none of their business.

This is key. A child has to have enough self esteen NOT to try to be a sheep and tell his/her friends all his business because he/she will be judged by whatever he tells them.

Its a no win situation to tell teen peers about your sex life,because you may be pressured into sex because they know you are still a virgin. Its crazy and stressful in an already stressful new world for them.

So I made it a point as a parent to teach my children all they want and need to know about sex with open conversation. The older my son got, the more stuff we covered, we bagan sex talks at the age of 9.

Now I am repeating that pattern with my 9 year old son Matt. I hope he takes my advice as well.
