Whoever said, "Take a picture, it'll last longer," obviously didn't have R. Kelly's best interests in mind.

The embattled R&B singer is in trouble, again, over a dozen nude photos of a minor found in his Florida home.

The camera-ready crooner, who is already facing kiddie-porn charges in Chicago stemming from an alleged videotaped sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl, was arrested in a Miami hotel this morning and charged with 12 counts of possessing child pornography.

Bail was set at $12,000, and Kelly posted the bond almost immediately, according to Carrie Rodgers, a spokeswoman from the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

The digital photos of Kelly, 36, and an unidentified teen girl were found during a search of his Sunshine State residence last June, when the singer was busted on the initial kiddie-porn charges issued by the state of Illinois, according to Rodgers. The illicit images were downloaded from a digital camera seized at Kelly's rental home in the town of Davenport, outside Orlando.

The photos were then turned over to the state attorney's office, which issued last week's arrest warrant. (The arrest warrant is posted online at the Smoking Gun.) Police say the seven-month lag between the seizing of the evidence and the arrest warrant was because authorities wanted to identify the girl in the pictures.

Local news reports indicate Kelly was shown having sex with a minor in three of the photos, the girl in question is nude in the other nine shots.

Meanwhile, reps for Kelly accuse the authorities of grandstanding. "At this point, it looks to us like a classic case of piling on, in which a local jurisdiction tries to make headlines by attaching itself to a celebrity case," publicist Allan Mayer says in a statement. "As far as we can tell, the charges all relate to R. Kelly's arrest last summer. In other words, there is nothing new here."

Mayer's office followed up with an additional statement that, again, charged the authorities with playing to the cameras and also disputed where the photos were found.


"The more we learn about these new charges against R. Kelly, the fishier it all seems," read Mayer's statement. "For one thing, the pictures he is charged with possessing were not found in his personal possession or even in his house but in a recording studio some eight months ago. For another, they involve no new alleged misconduct but precisely the same allegations Kelly is fighting in Chicago. We can't help but wonder what has motivated the Polk County authorities to file charges that are essentially a rehash of a case being adjudicated in another jurisdiction. With Kelly's career on the upswing again, is it possible that they're more interested in publicity than in justice?"


At the center of Kelly's legal troubles is a tape allegedly featuring the Grammy winner engaged in lewd sex acts with a teen girl, which was anonymously sent to the Chicago Sun Times last February.


Singer and former Kelly colleague Sparkle has claimed the girl on the tape was her niece, but the identity of the victim has been withheld because of her age. The girl and her family deny she's on the tape, which has been heavily bootlegged and distributed online. It is not known if the girl in the new photos is the same.


The overexposed entertainer, who entered a not-guilty plea to the 21 original charges last July, had been out on bail awaiting trial.


Kelly, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, faces up to 15 years in prison and a $100,000 fine if convicted of all the Illinois charges.


He has also been the subject of at least four lawsuits accusing of him of sexual misconduct. Kelly has settled two of the suits but says he will battle the others.


Kelly touched on the legal troubles that have stalled his once high-flying career in the 2002 single, "Heaven, I Need a Hug." The singer's next album, Chocolate Factory, is scheduled to be released in February.


An "inspirational" children's book detailing the artist's rags-to-riches transformation, I Can Fly: The R. Kelly Story, originally published in 1998, is due back in bookstores March 1.
