John Spink, jspink@ajc.com A huge crowd -- estimated by a police officer on hand at 5,000 -- lined up at the Apple store at Lenox Mall early Thursday as the new iPhone 4 went on sale.

L. Parker, an Atlanta police officer, estimated the crowd at Lenox Mall at 5,000. The line snaked throughout both sides of the atrium on the upper level of the mall from one end to the other.

At Perimeter Mall, a crowd estimated by a security officer at 1,000 to 1,500 waited in two lines: customers who had pre-ordered and those who were waiting to order.

Don't get wrong - I luuuuuv the iPhone. But I ain't runnin' to replace my 3GS and I sure as hell ain't standin' in no fuckin' line to buy one.

It looks intersting enough but all I really want 2 do with my phone is make phone calls or receive them.

well i won't begrudge anyone who wants to line up for one. no different than doing that for a concert or movie release i guess. it's the "bragging" rights i can't stand.

there's a guy who works by us and is getting a new iPhone or gadget every other week. his perogative. HOWEVER...he always has to come over and talk really loud about it. as if any of us really cared. it's sad because he acts like he has something NO ONE in the entire world has. if it's not an iphone it's a computer, or some new application he's added. he gets mad or frustrated because someone has something before he does, gets bitchy about it, then tries to one up them. wtf? LOL. besides, he always talks about some porn, chat application or hot guy screensaver he's added.

iphones are cool i guess, and i can see why peple love them. but for me, it's not something i will die without. it's a phone.

Really, i was like that too...but it did change since i have an iphone...i read books on it, my gym-routine is on it, email, skype, my bankaccount, i even have my shoppinglist on it (it's directly connected to the supermarket i go to) and the list goes on and on...

Here's what I don't understand about the iPhone obsession: people stand/sleep in line for 4 days to buy a $500 phone when a "new and improved" version will be out in 6 weeks. Having to always have the latest and greatest, especially when it comes to something like a phone, has never made any sense to me. Especially when the "outdated" model is only 6 months old.
