Has anyone ever tried this?

Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a naturally occurring psychedelic drug of the tryptamine family. It's supposedly contained in plants and in the human body. Supposed to cause visions and even out-of-body experiences. Some people have said they were in contact with other-worldly entities.

I know someone who has tried it and keeps telling me it's all good and I'm just kind of scared. I never liked anything or any drug that makes me lose control of my mind. And with DMT, I keep thinking of "The Serpent & the Rainbow" kind of trip. There is actually a Brazillian church here that has been given permission to use it in its ceremonies.

I know it's illegal but hey, people here smoke weed and talk about it so I just wanted to know if anyone knew more about it that could help me convince my friend to stop. Or should I try? He recently did some and couldn't breathe.

25 subjects underwent what Strassman called “adverse effects,” including terrifying hallucinations of “aliens” that took the shape of robots, insects or reptiles. Some subjects remained convinced that these aliens were real in spite of Strassman’s efforts to convince them otherwise.

I just have so many questions. What purpose does it have inside us? If it is already in your body why is it illegal? My friend says that he wants to expand his consciousness to become a better artist. He also says that DMT is released in abundance when we sleep and when we dream we are actually 'leaving our bodies' to go to an alternate plane of existence. Also that he felt that 'something' or someone was trying to speak 'through' him.

This stuff is just scaring the crap out of me. Never even heard of it until now. Now when I go to sleep and have weird dreams I wonder...

The older I get, and the more I study anatomy & physiology in school, the more I feel that these things (dreams, visions, what have you) are just our chemicals reacting and creating experiences. That doesn't make it any less real or useful - in fact, the more I learn about the cellular and chemical worlds inside our brains and bodies, the more wondrous and fascinating it becomes to me.

I just think a lot of "out of body" and "otherworldly" experiences aren't so otherworldly - we just come up with fabulous ways to describe them so we can fit them into a set of beliefs that seem to make sense and make us feel special. This world can be so drab and painful, humans have always devised stories to tell ourselves there's something much more fantastic out there.

Personally, I think we're just at the tip of iceberg with regards to brain science. And I'm just trying to find out more about this chemical. Side-effects, etc. The brain is so mysterious. We know it can heal if the person believes it can. But why do we dream??? Why do some dreams seem absolutely real while others are forgotten as soon as we awaken? And what is consciousness??? Three pounds of gray matter trying to solve the mysteries of itself. It's kind of funny...sub atomic particles forming atoms, molecules, cells, tissues, etc., and everything else, asking ..."What am I?"

Me neither. I would be way too scared to try it. I don't even try weed even though I lived in a rasta village in Trinidad for half a year where everybody is smoking non stop .

Scares me too. I'm afraid he will go off on a trip and not come back. Hey... maybe this is where all the alien abduction memories come from.

Claiming roots as far back as the tenth century BC, members feel the movement then lay dormant before reappearing in Incan Peru in the fourth and fifth centuries BC. UDV as it is known today however was "re-created" on July 22 1961 in Porto Velho, Rondônia, Brazil by the rubber-tapper José Gabriel da Costa (now known as Mestre Gabriel).

Mestre Gabriel was born in 1922 in Coração de Maria, a town near Feira de Santana. Uneducated, he left home at the age of 20 to become a rubber tapper in the Amazon region, thereby coming into contact with the South American Indians of Bolivia and Caboclos of Brazil, experiencing their Ayahuasca. Inspired by his visions, he founded UDV. Mestre Gabriel died in 1971.

In Brazil, a number of modern religious movements based on the use of Ayahuasca have emerged, one of them being the União do Vegetal. These movements are considered to be animist, shamanist spiritism mixed with Christian imagery. The União do Vegetal uses the term Christian Spiritism to describe its religious denomination. The União do Vegetal has members and churches throughout the world. UDV has over 10,000 members worldwide, about 130 of which are in the United States in six different cities. UDV members participate in ritual consumption of Hoasca in a group setting.

Hoasca tea made from Banisteriopsis caapi and Psychotria viridis (the only two ingredients used in the UDV's preparation of Hoasca) was shipped to the American membership from Brazil. U.S. Customs agents seized a shipment and raided a UDV member's office, finding over 30 gallons of Hoasca tea in 1999. The UDV sued in 2000, seeking exemption from the Controlled Substances Act and equal treatment under the law.

In 2001, the 10th Circuit Court of New Mexico granted a preliminary injunction preventing the Government from interfering with UDV's religious use of Hoasca. The Government appealed and the appeals court stayed the injunction of the lower court. In December 2004, the Supreme Court lifted a stay thereby allowing the church to use Hoasca tea in their Christmas services that year. The Supreme Court heard oral arguments for the case on 1 November 2005.

On 21 February 2006 the Supreme Court issued its ruling on the case. The court ruled, unanimously, that the lower courts had not erred in holding that the federal government had failed to prove the "compelling interest" in barring UDV use of hoasca required under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the opinion in the case, the second opinion he authored as a member of the Court. The case was remanded to a lower court for further proceedings.

Abuse of this drug could also explain some alien abduction experiences. Someone slipped some purified DMT would be in a really messed up state. It is good to know about this because if you ever see aliens, you might reasonably consider if someone has secretly drugged you.

Are they real or hallucinations?

Almost all DMT psychonauts who have broken through to the other side feel that what they had encountered was not just mere ‘hallucinations’ , ‘hypnogogia’ or even material from the subconscious mind.

These experiences are not described as dream-like. If the entities have an existence independent of the DMT-influenced subject, then a realm of existence has been discovered which is quite other than the consensus reality which most of us assume is the only real world.

thanks for the info., my husband is from brazil, so when he got home from work tonight i asked him about it, and so he told me what he knew & showed me videos about it on youtube. i had never heard of it at all the whole time i lived in brazil, so i was surprised to find out about it. kinda scary to me, i don't think i would want to mess around with that stuff!

thanks for the info., my husband is from brazil, so when he got home from work tonight i asked him about it, and so he told me what he knew & showed me videos about it on youtube. i had never heard of it at all the whole time i lived in brazil, so i was surprised to find out about it. kinda scary to me, i don't think i would want to mess around with that stuff!

So did he say it was common in Brazil? Or just used by the people in that particular church?
